fertility accupuncture

Thinking about trying this. Any experience ? (i guess if so you would not be on this board) They have a free consultation so will at least check that much, not sure what else to try. Dr is only going to do so much most likely. Ugh, I hate this. And another person I know announced her pregnancy. Ugh!! Booo, pity party for me

Re: fertility accupuncture

  • Hi Kristin,

I did try acu before I ever went to an RE. I went for a month and I did wind up getting prego, but resulted in my second natural mc at about 5 weeks. it was after that that i started going to see an RE.

i wasn't comfortable with acu, hate needles and didn't find it relaxing. but i know of others that think it's great. I only went because i had heard it could help become pg. I did not go to acu with any of my fertility treatments though, I only went that one month.

I also know most acu isn't covered by insurance, but my acu was actually super nice and submitted a claim stating that i needed the acu for an injury, so i did get a bit of coverage for it. definitely check out the free consult and see if it's for you.

and sorry you heard a pg announcement. those are always tough.

  • I did try it with my last IUI - an hour before the procedure....I don't have an aversion to needles or anything, so that part didn't bother me.  I did find it relaxing; and I couldn't even feel the needles...remember they are small, smaller than any I've ever seen - or had to give myself during this whole process.

There was this one thing she did...I was on my stomach; and she placed several needles around my lower back...then sort of 'linked' them all together and sent a pulsing sort of wave thru them...it was really cool and did not hurt either.

It definitely wasn't covered by ins...and was $100 per visit; although there was an option if you wanted to do several visits during different times (before & after) the IUI those were probably cheaper...and I might consider that next time.

Sorry for the long response!  Didn't mean to hijack your post!    Embarrassed

  • I had about 6-8 weeks of treatment (obviously with no success).  I loved the appointments, my acupuncturist was wonderful.  She was as much of a counselor/therapist as she was a "poker".  I was able to share things with her that I couldn't share with friends/family.

The treatments were relaxing and peaceful.  I definitely was able to find calm when I was there.  Unfortunately, it only lasted while I was in there... life always hit me at the door as I left! ;)

I stopped only because I left my job and it required 40 minutes and a trip over a bridge to get there (her office was 1/2 a mile from my office).

  • Maybe I should look into this, as my insurance covers nothing related to fertility (even testing for fertility health), but it does cover self referred visits to acupuncture. Go figure.

  • I started doing acupuncture pretty seriously last December. ?I don't know if it helped me get pregnant or not, but it did help with stress. ?I really like my practitioner too, and she's given me tons of great advice about everything, so I think part of why I like acupuncture so much is that I get to talk out things with her. ?She also prescribed me different herbs to regulate my system. ?I only took them when I was taking months off from fertility treatments. ?After my last failed IVF, I did an IUI just for the heck of it, and I decided to take herbs during the cycle just because I liked them so much. ?I ended up getting pregnant that cycle, but I don't know if it had anything to do with the acupuncture or herbs.

If you're thinking of doing acupuncture, I'd approach it with the mindset that you're doing it as something to take care of yourself during a stressful time. ?If it happens to help you get pregnant, then great!?
