DS's in home DCP is moving in the fall. We automatically had that comfort/trust with her from the beginning because a coworker used her for five years to watch her child (until he went to school) and she was another coworkers aunt (how other coworker found out about her and started sending her son there).
Initially, I didn't think I'd be comfortable finding a DCP that we didn't know or that didn't come from a recommendation from someone we know. You just never know these days, and that's scary. People can seem one way, and be completely different. But, a friend happened to come across a posting on craiglist of an in home DCP that's VERY close to our soon-to-be new house, and actually in my parents neighborhood (my parents don't know them), so she passed it along to me. DH and I talked about it and decided to at least go and meet her.
DH and I both REALLY liked her and left there feeling completely comfortable, like that's where DS should be while we are at work. Before starting the in home daycare, she was a nanny and then a preschool teacher at a local church daycare. She left the church daycare when her daughter started school and the school was too far from the daycare for her daughter to be bused. When she left the daycare, three of the parents of kids in her preschool class asked her to watch their kids in her home because they loved her so much. And, that's how her in home daycare started.
She gave me several references, and I called all of them. They all rave about her. She has all of her clearances, state license and is CPR certified and trained in first aid.
I was feeling completely comfortable about it (as comfortable as I can be having to switch the only daycare DS has even known since he was seven weeks old), until I read the child care post below and almost everyone said they could never ever use a DCP they didn't know, like off craigslist. And now, even though I like her, I'm starting to question our decision. I'm so sad our DCP is moving.
Has anyone else found a DCP on craigslist?
Re: Finding a DCP on craigslist
kind of
My mom is a state-registered home DCP and has been for almost 20 years. She advertises on Craigs List and is really relying on it now as she finds herself with openings from kids heading to kindergarten. I know in her case, the state sends references her way, but it hasn't been enough lately. The pool of parents seems smaller with so many people out of work.
Anyway, I would check with state and see if they have providers they could recommend or refer to you if you're hesitant, but I think as long as you're going somewhere you've checked out, interviewed, researched, etc. Where you initially hear of the person isn't the important part.
Knowing someone who's recommended to you through someone you trust is great, but not always possible.
Good luck!
Yes she was a teacher turned sahm. She has been watching dd for 6 months now and becoming a good friend to me. We love her.
Prior to that I had hired 3 other sitters on Craigs List that were good but all stopped watching kids for one reason or another. I never thought I would be comfortable with it but it has turned out awesome for us!
