i was already taking the target daily multivitamin, so i asked the pharmacist how the prenatals were and she said they were pretty good. at my doctor's appointment i told her i was taking them and she actually said they recommended them to a lot of patients.
I was given Prenate Essential which are HUGE and I hate so I asked them for some samples of ones that aren't so big and was given a bunch by my doctor's office.
i have spoken to A LOT of pharmacists about this. the main thing is to make sure you are getting 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folic acid (folate) every day. this strength is only available prescription, but you can take a couple over the counter ones to get to that much. folic acid is water soluble so it's ok to take a bit more than 1,000 mcg a day. if you are taking a pnv, then only take 1 a day and supplement with plain folic acid - this is what i do - because the fat soluble vitamins in the pnv should not be taken in excess, especially vitamin a.
they also recommend daily dha. personally i think the reason there are so many different vitamins is because the drug manufacturers are taking advantages of mom's to be emotions during pg and for many mom's it's getting the most expensive everything. i cannot justify paying that much for a VITAMIN. target has one that is $10 for a 90 day supply. that's what i take.
My dr. prescribed me one last time. Right now I am just taking a store brand over the counter pnv but at my next appt I am going to get a prescription one again.

$10/90days sounds great! I got the cheapest one at Rite Aid and figured I'd ask my Dr. at my first appt--but it was $10/30 days. I should have gone to Target :-)
I had started out taking a Jamieson brand PNV. When we started seeing the RE he made me switch to a prescription brand (PregVit) because he was worried about malabsorption with my IBS combined with the Metformin s/e.
I've had no problem with either brands.

Re: pre-natal vitamins
apologies in advance if this is too much info!

Every doctor I've talked to said 800mg of folic acid is fine.
I'm taking Flinstones Complete and a 400mg folic acid supplement.
I have kidney stones, so I have to be careful with vitamins. PNV can make monster kidney stones, even in people who didn't previously have stones.
No matter what vitamins you take, getting vitamins through fruits and vegetables is always the best bet.

I'm thinking about switching to these. I'm not a good pill-swallower. If I don't get my PNV down the first time, I start gagging.
