Hawaii Babies

Lori - regarding EC

i will post here so as to not hijack the other thread :)

I did read recently though that it's better for baby to have his/her feet on the floor for pooping since it means less straining.  But for now, she's not straining since she's still EBF, but once solids start full on (she's had her first tastes of banana, yogurt and hummus over the weekend) we may need to rethink it.

oh this is good to know. i have been sitting w/her on the toilet since we are in CA right now and she leans up against me and stretches her legs straight out sometimes when she is pooping...not sure if that is bad or not? i'll have to see how she acts when i put her on the toilet insert.

as for solids, how exciting that libby has started trying things! i am curious about the hummus.... since there are multiple ingredients in it, are you not concerned about possible allergies? i know that any allergy is rare so the risk is super low....but just curious.  also wondering about when it is ok to give babies things with spices in them....did the hummus have seasonings in it or was it homemade hummus?

Re: Lori - regarding EC

  • sorry, butting in :)

how did you set up the yogurt and hummus for self feeding?  I eat lots of hummus so I def. want to know what ways of presentation are working for libby.

hehehe, anytime :)  (maybe don't start with pepper...)  Seriously though, babies will do fine with food with varying tastes from everything I have read.

BF babies supposedly love various flavors b/c they are so used to breast milk tasting differently from day to day.

  • thanks for that link! :)
  • Jaime - it was store bought hummus and less than a pea sized amount on her finger.  So she basically tasted it...she's not really eating anything yet, just feeling/tasting.  I am not worried about the hummus...we have no known nut allergies in the family (the tahini could be of concern for those who may have sensitivities).  On the BLW forum many parents are giving hummus to their babies as a first food.  As for the complexity of flavors...I ate it throughout my pregnancy and since she's been born and the theory is that BF babies get BM that is flavored by whatever mama is eating. So she must love garlic because I eat it often!

It's pretty much an American thing not to use herbs/spices in foods for babies and kids.  In other cultures the babies eat what the rest of the family eats...spices and all.  In fact I recently read that due to the way American's introduce solids (bland foods and then mainly sweet fruits and veggies) it could be the reason kids are picky eaters and prefer sweets and carb-heavy foods (breaded fish/chicken, pasta with cheese, bread, etc.)

I encourage you to read up on Baby-Led Weaning...it outlines what is age appropriate for babies beginning solids at 6 months, which is pretty much everything your family eats except for items that aren't safe (like whole nuts, etc.)  If you have a concern for allergies, you can delay the introduction of those foods, but like you said, they are quite rare and even less likely if you have no family history of food allergies.

Robbi -  I loaded a Boon bendable spoon with the yogurt and she promptly popped it in her mouth.  She also sucked on the spoon and stuck her fingers in the yogurt and licked them.  She put her fingers in the hummus and tasted it that way.  If I have something in my hand or on my finger she will grab my hand and guide it to her mouth to taste whatever it is...it's pretty cute.  She doesn't seem to like to touch things herself too much...she gets fussy if stuff is stuck on her hands/fingers.  So stick shaped items (like roasted sweet potato sticks or grilled zucchini spears) are better for her and the mushy stuff she prefers to have loaded on a spoon or guided to her mouth by her own hand but one of us holding it for her. FWIW, I got the Boon spoon about 3 weeks ago and just let her start playing with it during meal times at the table and soon she was mimicing us and putting it to her mouth.  Too cute!

  • thanks Lori. we're really cautious b/c we have food allergies on both sides of the family...brent's mom is allergic to anything with sulfur in it and also shellfish...my brother is allergic to shellfish...and when i was in grad school i was diagnosed with allergies to peanuts, bell peppers, and potatoes!

i'll try to read that link when i have some down time.  like i said in a previous post, i gave her a steamed carrot piece and she gagged on it, but as robbi pointed out, it was probably too soft and she bit off too big of a piece.  she is already grabbing the spoon and trying to feed herself during meal times so i want to start giving her finger foods soon
