DD just started these. Last night was especially bad, at which point DH fessed up that she'd only napped about an hour all day. That would certainly explain it--especially on a day where she went to story hour for the first time, went swimming in the afternoon (including cruising in the shallow end for the first time), and started walking with a push-toy for the first time. I imagine her poor brain was overloaded, especially on that little sleep.
Poor kid. I also didn't know that you're supposed to leave them alone, and I hate to think that my attempts to rock her and sing to her might have made things worse.
If your LO had these, how long before things settled down again?
Re: Anyone's LO having night terrors?
My son only has them if he's way short on sleep. We picked him up from daycare yesterday and she said he never napped all day. Super early bedtime for him!
They're horrible, huh?
My DD had these for a short period of time and now will have them once in a blue moon. ?They are horrible! ?Sorry to hear that you are dealing with them.
I tried to console my DD when she first started with them (since I didn't know they were night terrors and thought she was in pain) and for her - it made things so much worse. ?I talked to my pedi about it and he told me that I should let her cry for a few minutes and she would most likely put herself back to sleep. ?I thought he was nuts but must admit - when I tried to go in and even just rub her back - she would cry for a long time.
The first time I let her cry - it was torture but she only cried for 4 minutes (I timed it!) as opposed to the almost 35 minute episode we had the night before when I went into her room. ?I found out later that during night terrors - the kids don't actually wake up so when you pick them up or try to console them - you can actually startle them and that is why they get so much more upset. ?
It sucks to listen to her cry but the time I let her go and she cried for 4 minutes - she went back to sleep - slept through the night and woke up happy. ?Didn;t seem to remember it at all. ?
Just my experience - good luck - I know how hard it is!?
