New to The Bump

TTC #1

I am finally deciding to post my story.  Wondering if anyone out there has experienced anything similar to me.

We are on Cycle 3 of TTC.  Cycle 1 I got a BFP, 2 in fact, then the next day a BFN followed by more BFN, but no period.  I called by OB/GYN and he had me do some blood tests.  I was thinking it was probably a chemical pregnancy. It wasn't, the Dr. said I didn't even ovulate that month, and he has no idea how I got two + results.  I know that false + are rare, but I have to think that maybe that is what happened.

Cycle 2 we tried agian, and went in for D21 bloodwork, and he said again that I did not ovulate. He suggested that if since I was ready to concieve, I go ahead and start clomid, because I was not ovulating. He said we could keep trying natrually but he couldn't say when or if I would ovulate.  So we decided to start the clomid.

I know its way earlier than most start trying with meds, but I feel like that BFP back in cycle 1 must have been a sign to get me to the Dr. to find out that I wasn't ovulating.

BTW I got of BC 5 months prior, and I have always had normal 29 day cycles, until last cycle when we did have to use provera, and my period at start of Cycle 2 came but was late and very light and very short.

Sorry this is so long, but like I said I am just wondering if I am alone?

Re: TTC #1

  • I am concerned. Your dr is giving you Clomid on Cycle 3? Have you had any other hormone levels done besides the CD21 blood work? Are you being monitored? Please say you're being monitored.

  • All he did was CD21 blood work, and thats it.  no monitoring or anything, I am going in Monday for my next CD21 blood test, first one after taking the clomid.  He did put me on the clomid, estrogen, Crinone 8% regime.  I read on some sites after I started the clomid that some people were being monitored, but not all.

He did test my thyriod, but mostly he just kept pointing out my progesterone level.

A little freaked out by this, now?!?

  • Um, yeah. I would be asking some hard questions. Why isn't he testing to find out why you're ovulation instead of randomly throwing meds at you? Why isn't he monitoring you to see if you're producing follicles, and how many, and to check the quality of your uterine lining? How long does he plan to have you on Clomid? What are his other options?

Have you yourself charted your cycles to see if you're ovulating? He may have caught a random anovulatory cycle, and meds may not be necessary.

  • I wasn't temping before this cycle, just charting my CM.  I am not sure why he didn't test for any of that. He said we would do 3 cycles of clomid, and then if nothing had worked he would refer me to an RE.  I am going to ask him a lot of questions next time I see him.  But could trying Clomid one cycle haver hurt anything?  I mean of course I'd rather do this au natural, but besides that have you heard of any negatives to Clomid.. like making it harder later or anything..

    BTW, thanks...

maybe not in the long run, but it can thin your uterine lining too much.   It can cause cysts.   There are reasons that one MUST be monitored on any fertitlity drug.

Also, until you chart for a few cycles to see what is really up, I wouldn't be jumping right over to an RE.

I am not planning on it.  If it didn't work this cycle I am prob going to chart for a few more cycles with out the meds, and then see what happens, and possibly switch OB/GYN.  I just figured when I went in to blood test after the first + test, that my dr. knew best, and I wasn't armed with as much info as I am now.

Of course there are negatives. There are side effects to every drug. It can thin your uterine lining, cause overstimulation of your ovaries, vision problems, and a host of other things your dr should have outlined with you. Why would you try just one cycle of anything if you don't know what the real problem is, and don't know when you're ovulating, etc?

You're only on cycle 3 of TTC#1. Time to take a step back, get a few cycles under your belt, and go from there.

  • It can take a perfectly healthy couple up to a year to conceive.

I don't understand why docs don't shell out that info first before writing scripts. That's just dumb.

  • Cycle fuucking THREEE??????? Are you KIDDING me???
  • I agree with pps, chart to find out if you're ovulating.  Giving you clomid this early seems really irresponsible, IMO.

Another negative is that most docs will only let you do 6 rounds of Clomid...ever.  Why waste one (or more) right now when you don't even know if you really need it?
