Potty Training

Telling me no

We are day 5 of officially potty training and doing great. No big messes on the floor!  DS will tell me "No" and sometimes try to hit me when I suggest we sit on the potty. This is just starting today. It's like he is trying to tell me that he knows best and doesn't need my help. I really want to just let him tell me but he can't seem to put words to it before he is going. So I tell him that he can not tell me no and not to hit, then put him on anyways. I am putting him on every 2 hours or so. After his nap he had a dry pull up so I put on his undies and set him on the toilet. He went after about a minute of telling me he didn't have to go. ..

Should I pick a schedule and put him on at those 5 or 6 times a day or completely let him decide when to walk over to the potty and tell me? I want him to be sucessful but not get so frustrated.

Re: Telling me no

  • Try changing the way you phrase it. If you ask, the answer will always be no. I had to say, "Let mommy know when you need to go potty. Say 'Potty run!'" The potty run comes in because she thinks it's hilarious to run to the bathroom, but I found it helpful to give her the words to use when she needed to go potty. Whenever I see her needing to go I just tell her to let me know when she needs to go, and she does. If I asked her, she would tell me no and pee her pants at the same time. She is stubborn like that.
