Yesterday morning my dad called to come pick up their vacuum. (Ours died
) Anyhow. He is the dog warden and had to run out by us to pick up a dog to take to the shelter.
I felt the need to see this dog for some odd reason (normally I don't). We have tossed around the idea of getting a dog for about the last year and a half, but were worried about the 'finding the right one' process.
Long story short, I felt drawn to him and we now have a really great dog. DH wasn't home, so if you know how cautious I am about decisions, that speaks to how drawn to him I was. He just felt like a good fit from the start. DH loves him btw! I heard him telling him this morning (while I was 'sleeping') that he was going to have to take him for a ride in his truck ![]()
So now we need a name for him. My husband is totally against anything color related. If it is color related, it has to be not obvious. He's very sweet, playful, but not overly so.. he listens well.
Some of DH's ideas are Duke, Jake, Max, Ace.. umm... I forget what else.
Noah is the kids' suggestion, but that's not an option.
Also, to the pet owners out there, what is a good natural/organic food? I know of Blue Buffalo, but is there something better? We'll be taking him to the vet shortly, but he must eat in the meantime ![]()
Thanks ladies!
Re: Let's Play - Name That Dog!
Well I'm not creative a bit, but from your list I like Duke and Ace.
And how cute is that dog???
Posts on cloth trainers/PLing
I LOVE HIM! He looks so sweet!
I like Jake. He looks like a Jake.
Also, Remy. I dunno why but that was the first thing that popped into my head. I don't know if I spelled that right, but Rem-E. haha
for food, we feed our dogs taste of the wild. for the past week we've been mixing in a little big of wellness core because they're being brats and not wanting to eat.
i've used blue buffalo in the past as well and liked it, but we decided to go the grain-free route.
He is so cute!!!
I like Ace
oh and i like Jake.
DS's favorite song is feed jake by the pirates of the mississippi (i'm just assuming it's his fav song because he always calms down as soon as we start playing it....and my FIL was the drummer for the pirates so of course DS likes to listen to his Ogie "make noise" LOL!)
So sweet! I just want to pet his soft puppy ears!
I like Max and Ace. For naming ideas, do you guys have a favorite book or tv show or sports team that you could use for inspiration? I have lots of friends whose pets are named after baseball players. Hey, maybe you could call him EFFer!
Awe - he looks so sweet!!!!
I like Jake.
Look at the cute puppy face! Aw!
My suggestion is Jet (as in jet black)
lol I veto Max!
i like jet or ace,
I also didn't like Max. But another suggestion was Sam...and I also didn't like that.
But man is he a cute puppy!
Ahhh what a cutie!!
I'm a huge fan of people names- our dogs are Zoe, Izzy, and Moe.
I like Jake. And as soon as I saw his face, Georgie popped into my head. No idea why. He looks curious, like Curious George... maybe that's it.
Congrats on your new family member!
Tales of the Wife
me too!
Big E (6) & Little E (2.5)
I like Jake, but I also like Simon. A friend of mine took Simon, and rearranged the letters and now has an adorable pup named Nismo, which looks a lot like the pup you have acquired.
What a cutie!
I like Jake, Cody or Jack. If you plan on taking your dog to a dog park - be prepared to have several dogs respond to any of those names. Our dog is named Lucky.
We feed Blue Buffalo large breed - prefer it over Wellness and it's a little less expensive.
Is he a puppy? He looks like a puppy. For a puppy, you don't want to go grain free -- too much protein is bad fora pup. Therefore Blue Buffalo is an excellent choice for a young dog -- it's what my dog was on when she was a puppy, and then we transitioned her to Innova Evo (We tried Orijen, which was also a great food, but it didn't work for her tummy.)
here's a great website: https://dogfoodanalysis.com
Basically, the main thing you are looking for is that the first ingredients named are NAMED protein meals -- such as "chicken meal" or "lamb meal." NOT anything like "meat" or "by product" (that means it could be anything, including ground up feathers, sick animals, the biohazard bags they come in) and if it doesn't say "meal" then they are taking the water out and that should put it further down the ingredient list. Also, be careful of ingredient "splitting." You might see a food that's like "chicken meal, rice, brown rice, white rice..." and what that means is that there is really more rice than chicken meal, but they make it look otherwise by splitting the ingredeints.
You don't want anything less than four stars from that website. They're also pretty good about saying "this is a better choice for puppies, even though it has fewer stars. Like BB is a 4 star food.
And really, in terms of price you are talking about one or two cents more per meal to get a MUCH better quality food. You feed less of a good food, so it stretches farther (my dog eats 1.5 cups a day of Evo while another dog her same size would eat 3-4 cups of crap like "beneful") and the amount of money you are going to save on vet bills is astounding. Every year my friends dogs who eat crap get staph infections or other rashes, impacted anal glands, all kinds of things. I really think it's a product of the food they are eating.
Also, stick to kibble, unless you are going with a "raw" diet -- don't get wet canned food. Kibble is much better for their teeth. My dog's teeth are fantastic because she is ONLY fed kibble and hard treats like dried out bones. (Pick those dried out bones or those chewable nylon "nylabones" bones instead of rawhide for chewy snacks -- rawhide can be bad for their tummies.)
As for a name, I love the name Jake, and I had a black dog named Jake, but for training purposes the best dog names are two syllables with a hard consonant, like Cody, Rufus, Marley, Sammy, River, Blackie, etc. The two syllables make it easier for a dog to differentiate it as you trying to get their attention.
He's adorable! Good luck!
Out of the names mentioned so far I like Jake. I knew a black lab named Bear once, looked alot like that pup. Or you could name him Eco.
And we feed Orijen.
Thank you all for the help
I can't wait to talk to DH about the name when he gets here.
Allie! Thank you so much for all of your help! I am heading over to that site now. I'm hoping to go to the pet store when DH gets home.
My dad thought that he was around 6-9 months old. I'm hoping the vet can give us a good guess too.

Ditto Allie about the dog food. Pay more for high-quality (ie: MEAT) food. The inexpensive stuff is mainly filler that will end up on your lawn. Our dog does best on lamb for whatever reason. I think he can just sense that it's the most expensive
We just recently switched brands, so I can't remember what the name is (or old brand was bought out by proctor and gamble, so our store stopped carrying it because they anticipated the quality to decline and they don't support animal testing). I highly, highly recommend that you find a local, natural pet store. They will carry the best food. You can't really get anything better than Iams at a grocery store.
I vote for Jet or Ace. Actually, I thought he looked like a Clover, but it sounds like your family is leaning towards a more "manly" name.
He's adorable! Enjoy!
He's adorable. Dogs i know -- it's babies where I'm clueless. LOL! My husband and I do rescue work here and foster and stuff, and sometimes the dogs come in with all kinds of health problems and it turns out it was all food related -- because in the pound they might get anything (or nothing at all). I had a foster once who the pound vet said she'd have to pull her teeth and after a few days with a rope bone and a nyla bone, they looked fine. Turned out she was getting all canned food before.
Also, sometimes if they're strays they have food aggression or gulping problems initially, because they don't know if you will take the food away or they are used to fighting for it. Gulping can be really bad for them -- bloat and intestinal distress) so if you think he's eating too fast and not chewing, a very cheap trick is to put the food in one layer on a baking sheet or sheet cake pan. It forces them to eat more slowly since they can't get as much in their mouths and it's a lot cheaper than getting those "barrier" dishes. And i don't know if you plan on crate training (I love it!) but we always fed the fosters in the crates because they quickly learn they have the food all to themselves and don't need to snap at you or eat too quickly. Solves food aggression in a snap.
I didn't see the name Hemi! Given your DH likes trucks... that would be cute.
Make sure not to feed any food/treats with wheat, yeast, or corn. Rice is a safe grain for dogs.
i make my own treats with natural peanut butter and brown rice flour.
