I can't get DD to go to bed now. We're 6 days into potty training (we did 3-day over the weekend with pretty good success). She is doing so well with peeing and pooping on the potty but now before bed she insists over and over that she has to pee/poop. She then sits forever and either tinkles a little or gets up and says she's done without doing anything. Then I try to put her in bed and she starts all over again saying it's potty time, insisting she has to go and then sitting there forever. Repeat over an hour! When I finally get her in bed, she sometimes still tells me she has to pee. I'm worried she's going to pee the bed. So far she only has one night. All the other nights she woke up dry and once called me at 2 a.m to pee on the potty.
Help! How do I get her to do what she needs to do on the potty and go to bed? Is it just going to take time? Should I just give her a certain amount of time to try and then put her in bed and see how it goes? It's so hard to know when to go in to take her to the bathroom when she first goes to bed vs. her just dragging. When she calls me in the middle of the night I definitely go up (and last night it took another hour to get her back in bed!).
Re: Help! Dragging out potty time before bed
DD did this, too. The first time she said she had to pee we put the story down and rushed right out of her room no problem. She sat on the potty, did nothing, and then said 'all done' like 3 seconds later and got up. Okay, fine, but she did that 3 times in a row and by that 3rd time I could just tell she was doing it to prolong having to go to bed.
The 4th time I brought the story with me and when she was on the toilet I read the story to her lol. She actually remained seated and did pee....plus the story was (finally!!) finished so once we could get down and go back to her room, I tucked her in and said good night w/a clean conscience lol.
She doesn't call out at night to pee (yet?) so we just let her sleep. She's wet the bed (a ton) both nights 1 and 2 but last night, when I gave her her last drink 2 hrs before bed, she had only the teeniest wet spot so she clearly has the cabability to hold it 10/11 hrs as long as she's not full.
DD was the WORST about this, but it's finally stopped. She PTd a month ago and the first 2 weeks were pretty much like you're describing (both at night and at naptime). She'd say she needed to go, but wouldn't. Repeat the process (over and over) for 1-2 hours and of course I didn't feel like I could tell her no b/c she was still so new at all this! I pretty much knew that she didn't really need to go though; we cut off liquids 2 hours before bed and she'd pee right before bed and she's never wet her bed before. But I still couldn't tell her no.
Anyway, I think the newness of it has worn off and she's pretty much quit doing that. She's great at making other excuses (and was the queen of them even before PTing, so it was just another great excuse for her). Anyway, I'm not sure I have any advice for you other than just letting her go and eventually it'll get old and she'll stop. GL!
