Prisoner of the breast

Does anyone else feel stuck at home due to breastfeeding? I'm so anxious to go out and do things - lunch with friends, shopping, etc. I'm going nuts at home alone all day. But I'm so afraid to take DD anywhere because I don't feel comfortable yet breastfeeding in public. Plus she wants to eat like every hour and I'm afraid I won't be able to get someplace to feed her fast enough before she starts screaming. Does anyone have any good tips? How do you manage? I feel like I have trouble just getting a shower and brushing my teeth everyday...

  • You're still really early into BFing, so it's totally normal to feel trapped and not want to BF in public.  I went over a friend's house when DD was that old, and you should have seen all the stuff I had to bring in order to BF- Boppy, multiple burpcloths, a rolled washcloth, Lansinoh cream, breast pads... it was crazy.  But now, I can BF her anywhere with my hooter hider, and she doesn't eat as often, so it's really easy to go places.  You'll get there, I promise!

  • Pump and bring a bottle.

Or, go somewhere you know really well, maybe some place close by, so it won't seem so risky/unknown.

Get a nursing cover, so you feel covered.

Wear two layers, the bottom one being a nursing tank, top one loose, so you can go for it wherever without even needing the nursing cover.

Eat somewhere/shop somewhere with a women's lounge. People seem to like the mall, for stores like Nordstrom's with such a room.

Go with a friend who is sympathetic so you'll have support. And jump in and go for it, the sooner you do it, the sooner you'll feel comfortable with it.

    Enjoy your days!

  • I've learned to feed her in the car or just whip it out & cover up. I also take a bottle of bm just in case i really just can't whip it out.?

when i need a shower, i've learned that the swing or bouncy seat is my friend.

  • To make it easier on you, you should take a trip somewhere that has a dressing room.  That's what I did.  I was at the mall, and it's sooooo much easier to relax that way.  The only other place I have bf in public is at a resturaunt, and I know I made people feel uncomfortable...oh well.  I also have a hooter hider!
  • I second pumping and taking a bottle -- that's what I did the first time I went out to lunch after having DD. There is the added benefit there of being able to drink a small glass of wine! Now I BF in the car if I have to. The mall is awesome because most of the major stores have spots to BF in their women's restrooms. You will get there. :)

  • I've only bf once in public and it was in the hospital's waiting room. Definitely get a nursing cover. I've also fed him once in the car. It was after grocery shopping and there was nowhere comfortable in sight. I think it'll get easier with time.
  • I feel the same way!  It's like I'm shackled to DD or something.  ugh.

I know BF is supposed to be great and bonding and all that, but to be frank I really resent having to do it.   I've started introducing formula 1/day just to give me a break (more mental than anything), but it's not going all that well with her little tummy, so I may have to give that up...
