q about high chairs

I've noticed that some of you (lori, robbi) are getting "non-traditional" high chairs - any particular reason, besides they're made of wood instead of plastic?  any other benefits I'm unaware of?

  • I wanted Jack to be at the table with us - the fact that it blends in with our furniture and doesn't take up any room in our small-ish house is a definite bonus.  We are doing baby led solids so it's important that he watch and learn and we want to start dinner = family time early so having him at the table reinforces that and make him feel totally involved.  Since getting it he has sat with us for dinner in his seat and loves it.

The Tripp Trapp grows with him - it will be his seat for many years (link about transition)

I think the one Lori got is similar.

My mom was hesitant that ours doesn't have a tray (how can you use it to contain him while you are cooking?)  but I'm not sure I plan to use it like often anyways.  If so our dining is like essentially in the kitchen.  It works really well at our table so far...

The other one I considered was the svan.  Jaime says it has showed up on mamabargains !!  you have lots of time, keep your eye out for it if you are considering it.

You can also e-mail the folks at Mama Bargains and if they still have one in stock, you can usually buy it from them, plus a small handling fee.

all of the reasons that Robbi mentioned!! (except we aren't doing BLW). i got the svan when it was on MB and it was around $150 or so... i think $160 w/shipping. i love that when she gets older, we can use it as a toddler chair :)

LOL - tonight i left her in the high chair after we ate dinner together while i baked up some brownies really quickly! if i was doing something more involved i probably would not have done that but the brownies didn't take very long and she was content to play w/a toy while in her chair :) we don't have a pack n play or play pen yet and w/her being so mobile now it's one of the few places where i can put her for a second now aside from the swing

if you keep an eye out on the baby bargains forum, they are often posting deals for the tripp trapp, and other similar high chairs (can't remember the names of the others). i would have preferred the tripp trapp i think (design/style wise) but the price was right w/the svan so that's what we got.

  • Libby is a big girl (already wearing 12-18 months and is not even 6 months old herself) so I needed something that would grow with her AND accomodate her where she is developmentally (young)...I originally bought a FP booster seat that supposedly goes up to 3 years old and she was too big for it (too tight on her chunky thighs and tummy).

I also like that the high chair we got is wooden and can transition well into childhood.  It's fully customizable...we got the tray, but we'll also be able to have her sit with us directly at the table, since we are also doing BLW.  I looked at the Tripp Trapp and Svan (two other popular modern wood models) and the Keekaroo has all of the same features for le$$, which is why I got it.

I also have babysat enough kids with plastic/vinyl high chairs and they're a PITA to clean not to mention not great for the environment and pretty much an eyesore (although there are some newer models that are too cutesy).
