Shady Grove financial question-wwyd

The financial counselor wasn't available for our first appointment.  We're switching insurance companies as of August 1.  Our current coverage isn't that great, the new coverage is better (I'm not positive of the specifics.)  DH is deploying to Afghanistan for 6 months at some time in the fall.  (not before October, at least by January. We should have a better idea of when in a few weeks)  at my initial appointment, the doctor seemed pretty confident that we will have a second child.  They want us to not TTC for the next few weeks while they run tests.  I have a thyroid issue and they suspect a couple of other easily treatable issues.  My next cycle starts the end of this month and they want me to start testing then.  I really want to be pregnant before DH leaves.  I could postpone the testing until August when we have better coverage, but I'm worried that won't give us time to conceive before he leaves.  WWYD?

Re: Shady Grove financial question-wwyd

  • I would for sure TTC on your own regardless of what you're doing w/Shady Grove.  Are you doing something in particular that they said requires you to abstain?  Do you know when you're going to hear from the financial person so you know what is/isn't going to be covered?  If you're doing the testing now, you should be done and fine to get a few cycles of treatment in before your husband leaves even if you wait until August to start the treatment.

  • My problem is recurrent pregnancy loss.  I've lost 5 pregnancies since my son.  They don't want us to ttc until they figure out the problem because repeat miscarriages can cause scaring and more problems

:-( I'm so sorry.  I hope they figure it out and things work out w/your timeline.  Definitely communicate to them that you have the timeline constraint.  I'm sure they will do what they can to help.  Good Luck!

  • I would set up a time to speak or meet with the financial person at Shady Grove and go over both plans so you have all the information and you will know your options. If possible, I would try to go in and meet with them face to face. They are great, but this way they will give you more time than over the phone (they seemed to want to just give me a quick, clipped answer, and then move on). They also seemed to like to just refer me to information on the web, rather than discussing it with me.

    Good luck!

  • I would wait until August to start treatments, that gives you a good 3mos and 3 cycles if you are regular to conceive. Good luck!
  • Can I ask how long you've been ttc? If it's been fairly easy for you to get pg, but not stay pg, I would say I agree with Shady Grove. If it's easily treatable, and another miscarriage ups your risk of scarring, etc. I would wait the few weeks through the testing and start treatment in August.

The down side of your try now plan is if you do get pg, and have another loss, they'll make you wait 1-2 cycles before resuming any testing/treatment. So you'd really be pushing trying to get in any sort of help from them before your DH is deployed.

I know it's hard to wait, and especially with the prospect of your DH being gone for 6 months and having to wait until he returns - I can't imagine.  But I think there is probalby a reason they chose this route. If it's something they can fix by August, like pp said, that gives you probably 3 cycles to try with the help of Shady Grove before he goes.

We've been TTC for about 18 months.  I had a m/c when DS was about 8 months old, then an ectopic, followed by 3 m/cs.

The question isn't should we ttc this cycle.  They want me to do testing on the first 10 days of my next cycle which will be the end of July, early August.  I'm considering waiting for the first ten days of the next cycle (some time in August) to start the testing instead of going out of pocket. The downside of that is that DH could potentially deploy in October leaving us only one cycle post testing to ttc.

ahhhhh, gotcha. ok, then i would call and ask them for whatever tests they would run and what your OOP cost would be. If I were in your shoes, and it were $500 and under, I'd probably consider paying it and moving forward faster since you're on a time crunch. I don't suppose there's any possible way they could code it differently (not as IF for instance, but as diagnostic ob/gyn type stuff?) that it might be covered under your insurance now?
