No pork when preg????

The Vietnamese woman who cuts my hubby's hair said that women should not eat pork when pregnant.  While I know she's not a medical professional and it's probably just an OWT, I was wondering if anyone else have ever heard this?  If so, why is it not ok to eat??

Was she talking about hot dogs or pork in general? I was never put on diet restrictions by my doctor and I rarely trust other people's opinions. The only things I was told to avoid were raw meat, fish, egg, and large cooked fish like tuna, swordfish and shark.

  • Well if we weren't supposed to eat pork then I'm screwed! I love me my pork tenderloin... teriyaki flavor lol. We have this about once every 2 weeks. I think it's probably a cultural thing. Maybe in vietnam pregnant women don't eat pork for some reason?

  • I have not heard of that. I am making pork chops tonight for dinner.
  • Ah, it's like being on 1st tri again. :-)
  • Grilled pork chops are one of the few meats I can eat, so lets hope not! :)

I don't eat meat, so I'm not sure, but I've heard that pork has many risks associated with it, so it should be avoided while pregnant.

Also, it isn't the best thing to eat when you aren't pregnant.  It's high in fat and contains thiamin.

I generally avoid things that aren't good for you, pregnant or not.  Of course I'll still indulge once in a while!

This. I DO eat meat but pork is actually quite bad for your digestive system. I don't think there's an actual pregnancy restriction on it specifically though. It is the closest thing to human flesh and your body doesn't digest it properly because it's confused by it. Amongst other things. To each your own though, it's def not going to kill you or harm the baby in specific way. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Pork has a tendency to carry more diseases than other meats, particularly parasitic illnesses. However, this shouldn't be a problem if it's properly cooked. So, really not anymore danger in eating undercooked pork than there is in eating undercooked chicken. Either way, cook it through and you're fine. By the way, if she's Vietnamese that could have something to do with it... I believe most of the animals we slaughter are monitored for parasites/dewormed regularly. I'm not 100% sure of the regulations because I only deal with horses when it comes to deworming and parasite control and they're not for consumption obviously, but the US is neurotic about that kind of thing, whereas Asian countries or not. In other words, I probably would be more concerned about eating pork in Vietnam while pregnant than I would in the U.S. Perhaps this influenced what she said?
