Traveling with Toddlers

We travel ALL THE TIME. Sometimes I get really sick of it. Both of our families are at least 3 hours away so I'd say once a month we're on the road visiting one or the other. We've even survived a trip to Florida with R in March (via plane though).

It seems though that as he gets older, he gets more and more cranky. He used to just sleep which was awesome, now he'll sleep for maybe the first 2 hours and then he's up and angry. We do stop so I can change and nurse him and then I usually try and give him some baby food while we're driving and he's in the car seat. After that though, I'm at a loss. I sit back there and make faces, play with his toys with him, etc. but he eventually gets pissed.

Does anyone have any magical secrets for what I can do?

  • We do lots of snacks, water in his sippy cup, new (small) toys and stop frequently.  I also sing to him quite a bit in the car (poor DH, I'm a horrible singer)!

Do you have Rowan in a convertible seat yet?  I think that really helped with longer trips for T.  Even though he's still RF, he can see out the windows because he sits up so much higher in his convertible seat than in his infant seat.

Oh, and as far as snacks are concerned, MumMums are great because they're easy for him to hold and don't break into a million tiny pieces.

Yeah we've had him in the convertible for a while and he loves MumMums. I guess I'll just bring a butt load of snacks this next trip and a new toy. I do have separate car toys and inside toys too. I mean I guess I don't blame him, car rides stink!

portable DVD player with a case that helps you hang it from the back of the seat.  Totally worth it.  Get lots of Wiggles DVDs.  Get the ones made in the past three or four years, they are better, longer, and have auto play so you aren't having to restart them all the time.  Oh, and the Sesame Street DVD compilation is awesome.

We travel a lot, and this has saved us.

Also, we plan stops every 2 hours that involve DS walking a lot.  IKEA, Cracker Barrel (we race him up and down the front porch), any good parks on the way (the Air & Space Museum in Dayton is awesome for us, 2 hours away AND the playground has restrooms right nearby).

Sometimes I just stop at a Target or a Walmart when he's reached his limit and walk him through the entire freaking store.

Makes your trip longer but totally worth it.  My mom used to pack at least one or two bouncy balls on trips with us and make us run around and play catch at rest areas.  She was super smart, lols.

  • No tricks here other than he does better leaving first thing in the morning.  He'l play for a while, nap, then play for a while.  I have a handful of toys to toss at hime.  I don't do snacks because I'm afraid he'll choke still and he can't regulate himself well.  We noticed no difference in infant vs. convertible car seat. For us if Andrew is fussing it's because he can't burp in his car seat, we stop burp him, and he's fine and we keep going!
