Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Argh, how to wean the swaddle...?!

:| I'm so stumped. DD can get out of the swaddle almost every time consistantly now (arms) and I figure I really do need to stop letting her wear it. I tried to let her out to test the waters last night in a Sleep Sack - mmm yeah, she woke up 6 times in 2 hours, and it'd take me 10 minutes of holding her hands to her sides and letting her suck my finger (she won't keep a paci in :p) to get her back to sleep. By midnight I gave up, I was too tired. I swaddled her and she slept for 4 hours, busted her arms out when she woke up at 4 for her morning meal, swaddled her back up and she slept until 7am again.

I do NOT know how to wean her from this thing, she still seems to find comfort in it, she's just so much stronger now.

Anyone weaned yet? How on earth did you do it?! Her arms go a mile a minute!

  • I did about a month ago.  He sleeps on his side.  That way his arms don't flail everywhere when I lay him down waking him up.  I have to rock him to sleep first then lay him in their on his side and he barely moves.  Unfortunately when he falls onto his back he never puts himself back onto his side.  He wakes up even though he's perfectly capable of doing it himself!

  • Our DD did the same thing.  We finally figured out if we swaddle her with her arms out she still feels snug, but doesn't wake herself up trying to get her arms out.  The first night or two she still woke up a little more than usual but by the third, she was sleeping like a champ.  Good Luck
  • At first, I tried to just put her in the sleep sack.  Not a good idea, she flipped out until I just gave in and swaddled her again.  So then we weaned it gradually, but it did suck for a while.  First we did one arm out for a week until she was used to it, then we did both arms out with her waist swaddled for another week.  After that, she went into the sleep sack with no problems.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback ladies, I'm going to put these things to the test... wish me luck :S!!
  • Man...I don't know. We had one arm out for a month and it went really well. Last night was the first night with both arms out and he slept from 7-11 and then only slept in 5-20 minute increments. I haven't slept since 11pm last night and I had only been sleeping for one hour at that point.

He also didn't nap at all today. That kid is so tired he didn't even bat an eye when I put him down tonight. We'll see how the rest of the night goes.

I can't put him back in it because he's too long for the miracle blanket. Even with just the one arm and the blanket lower. Otherwise I'd keep him in it until he was 18.

  • Great idea about 1 arm then the other. I did swaddle my baby last night just around the waist and for some reason it helped. Babies are so funny!
