hand-sucking??

is my DS the only LO who sucks on his hand and prefers this over his pacifier?  sometimes he even gags himself from getting too much of his fist in his mouth!  I'm worried this is not typical behavior for a 3 month old???

Re: hand-sucking??

  • My DD started sucking on her hand last week (6 weeks old).  At first I thought it was a sign of hunger but it's not - she does it randomly and yes prefers it to the pacifier - she is also looking for her thumb - she found it the other day for a split second put it in her mouth and then lost it.  She will take the pacifier when she is frustrated with her fist.   I think it's normal - I wouldn't worry.

  • I think it's normal, I have read a couple other posts like this and I know DS does it too, he still hasn't figured out how to get that darn thumb in there :)

  • No worries really, my son is the same way, especially during his Tummy Time.  I can give him a binky and he will spit it out, but will go right for his hand.  I don't think we had a sonogram while I was pregnant that he didn't have some part of his hand in his mouth.  It is his way of being comfortable!

  • Same here. He gets drool all over the place too. I have him in a bib most of the day now. From what I hear, it's normal.
  • Same here! DS won't take a pacifier anymore. He recently found his thumb and prefers that (but sometimes it's his whole fist). It even sooths him in the early morning so we get an extra 30 min. of sleep!

  • My baby does the same thing. It's so cute! She doesn't like the pacifier either.
  • It is actually a good thing!  They use sucking on their own hand for self-soothing.  They would be doing this from day 1 except they don't have enough neurological maturity to coordinate bringing their hand correctly to their mouth.
  • our LO sucks his hands all the time no matter how much we try to get him to suck the paci instead!

I didn't know that!  Very interesting.  DD is such a drooler!
