RP: IUD/BFing?

I posted this on 9-12, but figured I might get more responses here.

Seeing as I am really super fertile after having a baby (got pregnant on bc), I need to go on bc even though I plan to EBF.  I assumed I'd have to take the mini pill, but at my last appointment, my doc said that an IUD would be fine to take while BFing as well.  Does anyone have experience with this?  She specifically recommended Mirena, which I had planned to get after weaning.

If you have this and BF, did your supply take a hit?

Re: RP: IUD/BFing?

  • I got the Mirena at about 3 months pp, and my supply was fine.  My best friend had to have hers taken out because she got migraines, but so far I have been fine and really like it.  I'm the type who never has side effects to drugs though, if that matters.  No more periods, woohoo!

  • This might not necessarily be helpful, but I have the copper IUD (I can't remember the name right now) and it did not affect me at all. I was on the mini-pill at first, and it made me retain/gain weight and it affected my supply.

The copper one is different than Mirena though. Is there any reason why she recommended Mirena instead of the copper one?

    Thanks, ladies for the responses.

I'm not sure why she recommended Mirena instead of the copper one - I just mentioned that after BFing I planned to get an IUD, and that's what she brought up.

  • I have not BF yet but I LOVED my Mirena.  I had some bleeding on and off for the first few months (that may be less common after having a baby, though.)  So there was that unpleasant side effect.  But after AF regulated I loved it.  I had it removed while we were TTC.  I always recommend it to people.
  • I got Mirena when DS was 5 months. I bled for 2 1/2 months solid (the doc said it was 'irritated') I got really emotional right after. I think it also affected my supply, but just a little- I just was making enough as it was.
  • The Mirena makes your periods all but disappear after a while. On the copper IUD your periods become much worse and heavier. I got my Mirena at 8 weeks PP. There was no drop in supply at all. I EP'd so I really would have noticed.
