1st Trimester

Ladies who see an RE.

Did you go ahead and call your ob/gyn on your own?  Am I supposed to wait until the RE tells me I am "allowed" to?  The reason I ask is that I have another ultrasound scheduled next week.  My insurance (Aetna), which really had no infertility coverage to begin with, will not cover ultrasounds with the RE and it's $250 a pop.  I'd rather be saving that money.

I feel guilty for wanting to leave that office.  But at the same time, I never really got an "official" diagnosis after all the testing I did in May.  They agreed to let me try progesterone supplementation last cycle, and that's when I got pregnant.

  • I would let the RE or the RE's nurse know that you have no IF coverage and that you would like to switch to a OB/GYN so everything will be covered then.

  • My OB didn't want to see me until my RE released me.  Talk to both of them and see if they can work something out though.  Be sure to mention your insurance coverage issues.
  • definitely talk to your RE, I had insurance issues and mine really helped me out. As far as the OB you need to be officially released.

  • I did not see my OB until I am released from my RE - which by the way is this coming Sunday. I did schedule an appointment with the OB for the end of this month because I know his schedule can get a little crazy during the summer and I wanted a night appointment.
  • Mine never actually told me I was released or talked about what the procedure would be, but it was a situation where I was moving halfway across the country at the same time as I think he would have released me (right after a 6wk ultrasound, which looked great).  So he knew, obviously, that I was going to see an OB after I moved.

This.  Though my OB allowed me to make the 10 week and 14 week appt.  Since I would mostly likely be released by then.

  • Check with your insurance... my insurance (Humana) did not have IF coverage, but as soon as I was pregnant, the testing and u/s at the RE's office are no longer considered IF treatments (you're no longer infertile while you're pregnant!), and were covered.

Also, my OB did not want to see me until I was released, which was right around 8 weeks.

  • I didn't call my OB until after my RE released me @ 7w - my first OB appt was at 10w2d.  I also have no ins. coverage for IF treatment, but my RE's office really worked with me to get services covered (i.e. they never coded anything as IF - visits were always coded as ovulation dysfunction, so my ins covered it.... the u/s after pg was confirmed were covered as well).

As someone else said, I would call your RE office and explain the situation - see if they can work with you on how they code the paperwork to get more of the charges covered by ins.  If they can't, go ahead and make an appt with your OB.

Yes all this plus my RE helped me get an appt right away with the ob as soon as I was released.  He also caught the ob up to speed in all things ttc for me which helped the staff understand our situation better.

  • I suggest doing what the prior posters said and call your RE for more info.  My insurance does not cover any infertility treatments either, but as soon as patients become pregnant, the ultrasounds become pregnancy ultrasounds (instead of IF ultrasounds), and can be coded in a way that is acceptable by insurance.

That said, I think the normal practice at my RE is to stay with her until I am released at wk 10.  However, I explained to them that I will be traveling out of the country from wks 12-15 and will be away for the early prenatal screening (eg. NT screening).  So they said that it was ok to start calling my OB and start making appointments for the screening.  My 1st OB appt is at wk 8, so I guess I'll be overlapping between my RE and OB for a bit.

    Hope that helps.  Good luck!

  • My OB refused to see my until they received the release notification from my RE.  As soon as she gave the release, the OB set my appointment right up.
  • My RE wanted to do a viability u/s at 6 weeks with us before releasing us to an OB. He sent some records to the OB as well as a letter.
