Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Tried some CIO........not for us.

Background: LO is excellent at having a regular 8-830 bedtime.  She sleeps in her crib for a whole 5 straight hours but ALWAYS wakes after that crying.  We would try to pat her, shush her, and rock her.  The only thing that would get her back to sleep is if I take her in bed with me and have her comfort nurse.  She would go back to sleep with me as a pacifier.  So she sleeps in the bed with me for the rest of the night.

Soooo.....I tried doing some CIO last night to get my LO to get herself back to sleep when she woke up after 5 hours.  It was a horrible experience for both of us.  I was of course in agony the whole time.  And when I finally picked her up after about 8-10 minutes of her screaming she was trembling and sobbing so bad, it took another couple of minutes to calm her down.  Even when she fell asleep she was still sobbing in her sleep.  I'm thinking that I'll just wait it out and hopefully she outgrows it.  I know that CIO worked for a lot of moms/babies but every baby is different.

Anyone else choosing to waiting it out instead of doing CIO?

  • We've decided to wait as well.  LO has been excellent at sleeping through the night.  Goes to bed between 9 & 9:30 and sleeps until about 7.  Some times he will wake up in the middle of the night and I hear him wimper but will more often than not put himself back to sleep.  When he starts actual crying, I know something is up and I go to him.  Some time it's that he just wants to be comforted and nothing more.

It's not for everyone but it's been working for us.  I say you have to do what is going to keep you sane.  We both have to get up for work in the morning - getting up and putting LO back to sleep is much better than listening to him CIO.  There will come a point in time when we'll try CIO but we're not ready yet.

  • We waited until DD was 6 months. It was HARD the first night. But, now she STTN from 7:30 to 6:30. If she fusses more than 10 minutes, I soothe her or pick her up. You do whatever works for you. It's not for everyone. I never thought I could do it. Wink

  • I tried CIO one night but couldn't take it (my LO did go to bed at night but was still nursing). A week later I was so exhausted I went to the book store. The Sleep Easy book with the "least cry" method has been working wonders for us. It's like a gentler approach to CIO and he hardly ever cries now and is only active for 5-10 minutes when I put him down at naps or bedtime.

    Good luck!

  • I tried it too and I'm with you, broke my heart. I had such guilt as my son shook and sobbed in my arms. I couldn't do it.

One thing you could try is to let your daughter nurse for only a few minutes and put her back in her crib. Then reduce the amt of time you nurse each night and hope she'll start sleeping through that nighttime waking!

    Good luck.
