Babies: 6 - 9 Months

F/U to Circumsicion FAIL

A while back I posted a thread about my LO's circ not looking right and how I feared it would have to be repeated. I got lots of helpful responses about how this may just be inconspicuous penis and that his fat pad was pushing the foreskin down.....well, the adhesions continued to occur and so the pedi referred us to a ped. urologist. The urologist said that the OB did not remove enough skin and that the circ simply wasn't done correctly. He recommended that we repeat it ASAP if we wanted it to "look circumcised" when he's older and if we wanted to avoid the adhesions from continuing. I asked why do some people recommend waiting til one year and he said that that is the common practice when there is evidence to believe that everything will kinda grow into itself and adjust on its own, but that in my LO's case, there is too much excess skin that would never go away on its own and that ultimately, the OB didnt remove enough. He said they like to fix this around 6 months as babies at that age heal better/ its an easier process for them when younger. Anyway, I'm pretty upset to have to be faced with surgery now when this so could have been avoided in the first place if done correctly. I'm stressed and just hoping all this will go well. I just wanted to update everyone who may remember me originally posting this. Oh, and if you are anti-circumcising, please spare me the opinions as clearly, I have already made the choice at birth to have it done and telling me I shouldnt have circed him to begin with really doesn't help anything. (Sorry if that sounds ugly, but I had a not so nice comment left for me last time I posted about our problem). I am posting this so that those who helped me in my previous thread know what we found out and to help any other moms facing the same dilemma know what our particular urologist recommended.

  • poor guy!  I hope the surgery goes well.  Let us know how he is after all is said & done!

  • It's not going to be that big of a deal to fix this.  Noah just had his circumcision done this past Friday and is doing really well today.  The issue we had that I'm glad that discovered in the hospital was that his penis had a curve to it and if they did perform the circ. it would of had to be re-done.

Your Lo should be put under while they do his surgery.

  • What did the doc say would happen if you just let it be? Just wondering, cause if it would not be too much different maybe you could get awawy with not having it redone?
  • *hugs for the Mama*  I never read the original post, but I hope all goes well.

  • I was against circumsicion for my LO, but DH wanted it and I felt strongly that he had the right to make the choice. That said, for a long time, we had to pull back the skin during diaper changes.. at least until 7 months when it finally released which my ped. said would happen. The change happened almost overnight.. so for other mamas having issues talk to your ped. but know that eventually most work out on their own.
  • OH NO!!! =( My DS is kind of going through the same thing. His peepee looks different than his cousins, who is also circumsized and about 3 weeks different in age. Anyway, AJ's skin grew back and his pedi peeled it back to what it's suppose to look like. Well, he still has lots of skin, like it's still covering a lot of his head. I took him back to his pedi to check on it and she said it's because his fat pouch is pushing it forward and it should be fine once he gets rid of his baby fat. Should I get a 2nd opinion because his case sounds reallly similar to your DS's.
  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate your kind words. And yes, i will definitely keep you guys posted as this all progresses :)

He said we could leave it be, but that the adhesions would continue to develop which might lead to scar tissue developing. And also that he would appear "in between" uncircumcised and circumcised as an adult. My main concern was the adhesions....but believe me, I am not thrilled with the idea of general anesthesia and surgery...I am super scared :(

What you are describing is basically the exact same as my LO. And the regular pediatrician told me not to worry and that we would re-evaluate at one year as he would probably outgrow it. Well, the adhesions kept re-occuring and they told me that shouldn't happen so long as I pulled the foreskin back daily (which I do religiously) so I went back to the regular pedi who then went ahead and gave me the referral. Once I saw the actual urologist, he said it was definitely not going to resolve itself and that there was just not enought skin removed the first time. And that it would NOT fix itself after baby fat is gone. He said that in many cases, that is the case...but that with my LO he could clearly see the excess skin that should have been removed. I don't know!! I'm so confused...I am debating seeing another ped. urologist for another opinion, but there is only one (very large) ped urology group in my area and he happens to be one of the most higly recommended in the group. So I dont know if its even worth looking at another doctor in the same group since I doubt one would disagree with the other....ugh, I really have no idea what to do. I guess we are proceeding with surgery once the scheduler calls me, but I am so upset by the thought. I just really wish his circ had been handled correctly from the get go. :(

Awe :( well, I hope it goes well for your DS!
  • I hope everything goes well. We had something similar too, but ours ended up being only the fat pad. I'm curious on what your opinions on circumcision are now. I'm not trying to flame or anything, but I am unsure if I want to do it again if I ever have another DS. A part of me does, but at the same time I never want to put another child through that. Have you thought about if you would or not?

  • We're having the same issue.  I posted in your thread last time too.  All 3 peds in Trevor's practice said to wait it out until one year, it should change.  But we're at almost nine months and nothing is happening...it still looks exactly the same as the day he came home from the hospital.

His 9 month appt is next Friday, and I'm going to as for a ped.ur. referral.

Where are you located?  I'm in NJ and I have no problem traveling into NYC to have this done by a top urologist if that's the case.  This is my boy's "business" we're talking about ;)

You know, I'm not really sure.....I *think* I still would opt for it, but would definitely select a different OB (we had a bad experience with them from every angle)....but I don't know....I'm not sure how to feel......I'm just upset with the whole thing

I would definitely go ahead and get the referral....the urologist told us something entirely different from what his 2 regular pediatricians kept saying. I am in the Atl area....certainly not NYC big, but not an itty bitty city either...and would you believe there is one primary ped. urology group in the whole city? Granted, it has 33 doctors (or some crazy # like that), but still....
