DS is totally on whole milk now but I'm having a hard time cutting back the number of ozs a day. With formula he was still doing about 28-30 oz a day. And now he have been doing just whole milk for about 2 weeks and he is wanting more than the 18-20 oz that the dr told us to give him. We push food and I've even added small meals and snacks between meals b/c he must not be getting enough if he wants the bottles.
What's your bottle schedule and how many ounces?? DS does 8 oz @ wakeup, 6 oz @ naptime, 4 oz in the afternoon (which is the bottle I am trying to drop), and 8 oz @ bedtime = 26 oz which is too much!!!
Re: Bottles and whole milk
We give him breakfast in the morning- usually something like whole wheat toast with jelly or yogurt and a banana, etc. He gets milk or juice with his breakfast- usually he will drink about 3oz with breakfast.
For snack he has things like peaches, cottage cheese, etc., with water.
For lunch he will have a fruit, vegetable and a "main entree" such as macaroni and cheese or a hot dog. He drinks about 3oz of milk with lunch.
He will have another snack between lunch and dinner.
For dinner he has something along the same lines as what he had for lunch, with another 3-4oz of milk.
The only time we give him an actual bottle is right before bed. We give him 8oz of whole milk so he has a nice full tummy before bed.
My girls are on whole milk and still on bottles (although I am going for all sippy cups tomorrow...we'll see how that goes) I would aim for cutting hte number of oz. he is getting berfore trying to cut the # of bottles...
At 1 year the girls were taking 6 oz/formula/feeding - 5 times a day...we just started giving them only 4 oz. of milk/5 times a day...which = 20 oz./day..Our schedule is:
6:30 - bottle w/cheerios
7:30 breakfast
9am - bottle
10:30 bottle w/snack
12:30 lunch
1:30 bottle
3pm snack
5pm bottle
6pm dinner
the 9am & 1:30 pm bottles are the ones b4 naps and I am very afraid of cutting them...eh...we will see how it goes...
We are in the process of reducing the amount of bottles. I just dropped the one before nap. Before I dropped it, though, I started reducing how much milk was in it. I would give a nice big lunch and then give the bottle soon afterwards so that they were not too hungry and wouldn't miss having a lot of milk. Then I just started only giving the sippy with cold milk at lunch and skipping the bottle all together before naptime. The schedule now is:
Breakfast: 6:30 - sippy cup with breakfast and they each drink about an ounce or two, sometimes a little more for DD
7:30 - bottle: I put in about 6 ounces (it used to be 8)
9:30/10ish: snack and sippy cup with either water or milk- again, they each drink about an ounce or two of the cold milk
12 -lunch - offer sippy cup towards end - usually drink about an ounce
3pm - snack - sippy cup - they usually drink about four ounces at this point - I think it's b/c they don't get the bottle before naptime.
5pm - dinner - sippy cup with either water or milk depending on what they had with morning snack
6pm - bottle - 6 ounces.
Then we brush teeth and are sleeping by 7ish. They usually end up with about 20 ounces or so.
DD gets 8 oz of whole milk right away in the morning (7:30ish).
About 8 or 8:30 she'll have breakfast with water or juice - that varies depending on her mood just like anyone else. (She's not too big on juice so when she does drink it, we make it count with Mott's Medley or even V8 splash so she's getting fruits & veggies).
She naps from 10 until about 11:30 or noon then she eats lunch, again with water or juice. Another small nap around 2:30 for 45 minutes then a snack about 4.
She eats dinner with us about 6 or 6:30 with a few oz of milk and some water. The only bottle she gets is 8 oz of whole milk right before bed so she sleeps the 12-13 hours we're all used to.
