How long were you in the hospital after your C-section?

I have officially scheduled my C-section for August 10.  I know insurance covers 4 days, but I can't imagine wanting to be in the hospital that long.  The babies will be in the NICU and I think I would rather get into a regular routine of visiting the NICU and taking care of DS.  I know I will be in pain, but I think I would be so much more comfortable in my own bed in my own house.  I know I can't make any final decisions until after the C-section when I see how I feel.  But I am  just curious, how long were you in the hospital after your C-section?

  • I had a section with DD.  I went in on Friday morning and came home Monday early afternoon.

I don't know if it will be any different w/twins but my doc scheduled me again for a Friday and is expecting the same.

  • With my DD I had her Monday late afternoon and was discharged Saturday afternoon.  I liked being in the hospital, all the help was amazing.  With the twins I plan on staying until the kick me out.  I felt really good by the time I got home and my incision was healing nicely.
  • I went in on Sat and came home on a weds.  I really liked the fact that I had help and I really used the time to sleep at night and recover.  sure, was it loud and not my bed, but I would do it the same if i had to. I would always think that you will be there the whole time and if you feel great you could always leave early
  • Do you know for sure your babies will be in the NICU?

  • Section w/ Emerson-I went in on Sunday, section on Monday (failed induction) and requested to leave on Thursday.  They wanted me there until Friday but, let me go late Thursday afternoon.  hth-

ETA-I would definately stay those four days.  I think I'm scheduling my section tomorrow for just around that time.

  • My girls were born on a Tuesday and I went home Friday.  I had ZERO help from the nurses whatsoever when it came to the babies, so I wanted to get home where I didn't have to deal with the interruptions from housekeeping, food services, nurses checking vitals, etc.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I had the boys on Tuesday morning and was discharged Saturday afternoon. But I was glad to be only a few floors away from them, since I couldn't drive for two weeks and there was no one to drive me to the NICU.

Good point pea-kay.  I had forgotten about no driving for two weeks.

  • Induction was started Wednesday evening, had them via emergency c-section Thursday evening. Was discharged with Jozlynn the following Tuesday. Jeffrey came home the day after. All in all, I spent 6 nights in the hospital. It wasn't a 'normal' delivery though, I had complications with BP nearly the entire time I was there.. They were going to send me home Monday but wanted to monitor me longer. Honestly, it was nice to spend as much time as possible there, especially since I'd never had major surgery before.. All nursing staff was extremely helpful and we were able to put DD in the nursery every night to get some sleep - Can't do that at home :) GL!

I am assuming that at 34 weeks with TTTS, the babies will spend some time in the NICU.  At my hospital, being that early, automatically buys them 12 hours in the NICU.  I am definitely hoping for them to come home with me (which the doctors say is not unheard of), but I am planning on them being in the NICU for 1-2 weeks at least.

I went in around 10pm Wed night and had the girls early Thurs and i stayed until Mon.  I could have went home on Sun but since the girls were in the NICU I wanted to be as close to them as possible for as long as I could.  And even after I was released I still stayed at the hospital for a little to see the girls.  And then went back again that night.

  • I stayed as long as my insurance let me.  OB said I could go home a day before, but with a 2yo at home I wanted as much rest as I could get.

Pea-kay makes a great point about not being able to drive yourself to and from the NICU.

This! ?Wanted to stay as long as possible...but my two were with us in the room, not the NICU...so I wanted all the help I could get!?

  • I opted to go home a day early so I was there 3 days and I also turned down the visiting nurse @ home...I wanted to get home...I don't really like hospitals and find it annoying that I have to constantly ask for medication when I need it and then wait and get asked questions about pain level (it makes me feel like an addict or something and I am the kind of person who will not take anything for a headache and didn't drink caffeine my whole pregnancy) and have nurses walking in and out all day...plus, I needed/wanted to get home to my DS and start to establish things at home...the only thing I like about the hospital was the cranberry juice and that someone else cooked all my meals...
  • I had the kids at 11am on sunday and I was released on wednesday by 10am.

  • I had my babies on Monday the 5th and was discharged on Thursday. I was 34w4d. I could have been discharged on Wednesday, but I wanted the extra day to be closer to them in the NICU. I don't have any other kids, though, to worry about. My c-section was about 3pm (not scheduled - was sent to the hospital after a Dr. appointment) and I didn't get to my room until about 8:30, then didn't get to see the babies until after 9:00. When I got back to my room I still wanted to meet with the lactation consultant, so it was a really, really long day considering my Dr. appointment was at 8:00. I felt so much better from Wednesday to Thursday. I think that if I had left on Wednesday I would have needed to be wheelchaired out of the hospital, but on Thursday i was able to walk (slowly, and I was picked up at the door, but I walked).

  • I was in 7 days, but that was a bit unusual (I had an epidural headache). If I didn't have any complications, I think I'd have been comfortable leaving after 2-3 days. Smile
  • I went in on a Wednesday and came home on Sunday. I wanted to stay as long as I possibly could, esp. since Joey was in the nicu. Although, if I had a little one at home, I probably would have felt differently. I really liked being in the hospital. I felt safe and taken care of there.

  • I had my c-section at midnight on Thurs./Fri. and went home on Monday.  They offered to let me go home on Tuesday if I felt like staying longer (b/c the babies were still in the NICU), but I wanted to get home and start the routine (as it was).

That Tuesday--my first day home--I was in a LOT of pain b/c of not being on the hospital meds.  But then I felt much better by the following day.

  • I was in for 4 days, and had a REALLY hard time leaving they let me stay until the night on the 4th day b/c DH had to work and I was a mess.

P.S. Physically felt fine emotional mess.

  • 4 nights ( Mon morning - Fri afternoon, I really wanted to stay longer. I had the most amazing experience and  loved being in the hospital - amazing nurses, LCs etc.. really caring and helpful.  I sent babies to nursery for a few hours each day and overnight to try to heal as much as possible before we got home. My twins were born via c-s at 35 wks, no NICU time came home with us.

Ditto this except that I was there for a full 4 days/3 nights.  I never wanted to leave, they took such great care of me ..

  • Wow.  I'm surprised at how many people were there 3-4 days.  I had my (scheduled) c-sect on Thursday morning and went home Saturday afternoon.  I would have liked to stay another night, and my insurance covered 4 days, but for whatever reason they sent me home in just over 48 hours.

  • With my first I stayed 4 nights, 2nd I stayed 3 nights. The first night home after three nights, she screamed all night long. I swore from then on, I will stay as long as they will keep me in the hospital. You can request for them to leave you alone at night unless you request them to come in after 48 hours. Once you get rid of your epidural, you don't need to be monitored as closely.
