Did anyone switch to CD?

We've been using Huggies since LO was born.  I'm now interested in making the switch to CD.  How much $$ did you spend on CD (if you don't mind saying) and what kind do you use?  Are they hard to clean?  Any feedback you have is great.  TIA!

Re: Did anyone switch to CD?

  • I am about to switch also. I already have a few bum genius dipes but I will be buying soft bums. When I was pregnant my doula brought over a few different brands andd I liked them the best bc the sizes are very adjustable and you can buy 8-10 shells and 24 liners rather than having to buy 24 diapers. My doula also used them on her baby and said she preferred them over her other cds.

  • We switched from Huggies after using them the first 2 months of DD's life. She didn't have a reaction or anything, we just wanted to save some $ and do our part for the environment. We spent, all total, probably around $500 for everything (wet bags, cloth wipes, etc..). We have a mix of several kinds of diapers- Smartipants (currently with Artsy Fartsy Foo Foo inserts b/c the microfiber ones got stink issues), Gro Baby (which is now GroVia- these also have disposable inserts that are EF- we used them on vacation and they worked nicely), BumGenius AIO OS organics- these are some of my faves- great colors, trim fit, and I like more natural fibers (even though we do put a layer of fleece between DD and the diaper to wick away the moisture.), a couple of Bumpkins and a couple of other cute diapers I've found here and there. www.hyenacart.com has some cute WAHM made diapers. I obviously prefer the one sized AIO route- they're a bit more expensive at the start, but they're easy and should last the duration of our diapering days.

Cleaning wise, our routine is a cold water wash w/ just a smidge of detergent, then a heavy duty wash w/ hot water and an extra rinse with detergent and water softener (b/c we have hard water that causes build up on our diapers).

The best part about them though, is how stinking cute they are. I never even put those little bloomer things on DD that match her dresses, b/c I have enough diaper colors that I can pretty well always match her outfit!

  • We use CD about 50% of the time (huggies at nights and on the go).  We use Bum Genius and love them. Good luck with your decision.
  • we just switched at 10 months and wonder why we didn't switch sooner! it is SOOO worth is in terms of money...

we bought 24 diapers and did the buy 5 get 1 free bum genius so we spent about $330 for 24... we spend that in about 4-5 months on sposies...

they are SUPER easy to clean...we use rockin green detergent and it is amazing we absolutely love it!  I only do 3 more loads of laundrey a week!

We did the jillians drawers trial and it was awesome I would totally reccomend it because we though we would have liked the grovia diapers and ended up hating them (they are awesome diapers just didn't work for m) so def do the trial!

We ordered our diapes from kellyscloset though they seemed to be a little cheaper...

    hope that helps!

  • The Jillian website looks fabulous!  I think the trial sounds perfect and will order this soon.  Thank you guys for the information.
  • Kawaii Diapers are very afforable and come in one size fits all, we just got a few new ones to try and i love them, and they are really affordable!
  • You'll find that certain types work best for your LO so try a few different brands.  We are using prefolds and covers - I like the site green mountain diapers for both.  We spent about $50 on 24 prefolds and around $12 per cover.

I am a lurker here so I am butting in just t say that this is what we use.  I love prefolds with Thirstie brand covers.  It is the most economical and really easy.

  • I switched at around 4 months. I started out with 24 prefolds, 4 covers, and two fleece fitted. For only $125 (new) it was a great way to start in. I have never had a problem with them coming clean, we now do cloth wipes also.
