Postpartum Depression

PPD and no insurance

My husband was laid off two weeks after we made the decision that I would be a SAHM therefore we now have no insurance. When DD was born she was in the NICU for 8 days. With the stress of that and not being able to BF then DH losing his job among a million other things I am completely drained! I have had depression in the past and it runs in my family so I knew ppd was a possibility. Without the insurance I just don't know what to do. In no way do I have any harmful thoughts. I am sad and angry all the time and I don't want to feel this way anymore. What should I do? Thanks for the advice!

Re: PPD and no insurance

  • Look into COBRA or govt programs available in your area. You shouldn't be without health insurance (with or without PPD). Also, look into local church programs - a lot of them offer free counseling.

COBRA is ridiculously expensive! It would cost over $900 for my family. We have applied with an independent agent but it could be a few weeks before we know if they are able to cover us. I will certainly look into some church programs. I have started journaling to help relieve some stress and it worked for a few days but its definitely not going to get the job done. Thank you for your advice.

  • I found a clinic near me that offers sliding scale fees. They actually didn't charge me anything because technically I have no income since I'm unmarried. Try Googling like "sliding scale mental health (your city)" and you may find something.  I just went off of your member info of being near Cincinnati and found this place. I went to the billing page and it says " Out of pocket expenses: None - GCB staff will assist clients in obtaining benefits. During this time Hamilton County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board pays for services with County tax dollars."

    Hope this helps...

  • support groups are free, and may have suggestions for you to find care and medication for less $.  google for them in your area or check with your local hospitals, they tend to host the groups.

COBRA is expensive because there is no employer contribution.  Health problems for you and your baby will also be ridiculously expensive.  At least see if you can get your baby on a state children's health plan.

  • Can you call and speak to your OB? She may know of a low cost clinic or be able to get you into a free support group.

    GL!
