Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Potty training with new baby due in 3 months?

DS is 19 1/2 months and is showing most signs of being ready to PT.  We let him run around without his diaper, he will go if you tell him to (not on the toilet, we let him run free oustide) stops if you tell him to stop when he is ready to go inside and will give us a look sometimes when he has to go.  So, normally I would probably start trying to pt now or soon.  I am hesitant though because of his age, but also because we are expecting in early november.  Will there be regression?  Or should I just go for it?  It feels silly to wait for another three months after lo...what would you suggest?

  • I'm curious about this as well.  DD is not quite 18 months but is showing some signs...and I'm due in mid November...we're also moving in the next month or so and I was thinking of waiting till after we move to introduce the potty.

  • Friends of ours had their little boy potty trained at 2, and when his little brother came at 2.5 he regressed.  I guess it was temporary and not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.  The only thing that would worry me with a new baby coming in 3-4 months is if he could be totally potty trained by them.  If not it could really be a pain running him to the bathroom every 20 minutes + dealing with a newborn.

FWIW my plan is to wait until next summer, after the baby is here to potty train.  But my son is also not showing the signs of being interested that yours is.  Good luck w/ whatever you decide!

  • DS has always been interested in us going to the pathroom so at 18mos I bought him a potty for each bathroom( up and down stairs) he went on it the second day we had it. I was excited, but then didn't go again until a few weeks later. Hes 22mos now and he has started to show alot more interest now. He wants to flush and give you toilet paper so I think the end of the month  an goign to start hard core traing because I want him toilet trained for the daytime by the end of the year before #2 gets here.

  • I think a lot of kids regress, but it's temporary.  I'd say give it a shot.
  • DD was showing signs of wanting to potty train at 20 mos (DS was due in 2 more mos). I tried and found out she wasn't really ready. When DS was 6 wks old, she showed a LOT more interest and she was potty trained in 3 days.I used the exact same method both times.

I've read that a lot of kids do regress, if potty trained, once a new sibling arrives. But that doesn't mean you have to wait. I say go for it. I've also heard that once kids are ready, they 'get it' very quickly - like within a week. If it's taking a month or so, I'd say stop and revisit it later. JMO.
