She called her baby...

"ugly." Yes, it's true. My friend had a baby and her exact words were, "she's not as pretty as I thought she would be. She is actually ugly."

WOW!

I have never called my baby ugly.  I have always thought that she was so cute at the time but when I look back at some baby pics.......she wasn't that cute.  She looked a little squirrel-ish.  Hopefully she just means that weird newborn phase and not really "ugly".

  • I agree RNOHIO.. I think that we all can look at a picture or a phase that our child(ren) went through and think, "wow, they don't look so cute there." I've done it myself. :-) But to come out and just so bluntly say, "wow, I have an ugly baby" baffles me, lol. It actually makes me laugh a little.. but feel bad for that baby at the same time...
  • Yikes! hehe... I definitely look back at newborn pics of DD now and think "wow--she looked like an alien!" But you couldn't have convinced me at the time that she was anything other than the most beautiful baby that had ever been born. :-)

I must say.. based on your siggy pic.. I can't imagine your LO looking like an alien.. she's gorgeous!

  • meh.  i used to worry that i would have an ugly newborn b/c imo not all babies are cute.  sorry.  i think i would have thought she was beautiful in the mommy sort of way, but i'd doubt i'd be blind to an ugly newborn.  hell most newborns are alien-looking.  they get cuter as they fill out :)

When I was looking through DD's monthly pics I immediately pin-pointed what I considered to be her less than attractive month (months 1 and 5). But I don't think I ever actually referred to her as ugly!!

  • When my niece was born SIL wouldn't stop telling everyone how she (niece) looked like a troll. Not like the cute fluffy-headed toys, an actual ugly, twisted, bumpy troll. We (DH and I) kept saying it wasn't true, but SIL would not stop saying it. I mean, the girl was a little banged up from being born, but she was not as horrid as her mother was making her out to be.

  • Well, lol, when my first came out (and mind you I was drugged UP) I kept saying, "IS THAT HIM"???? And seriously, I was a bit freaking out at how smashed he was. Now I didn't flat out say he was ugly...but I was shocked at how he looked. (I KNOW...AWFUL.) But a few hours later he was starting to get really cute so I don't feel bad. :)

Aww, that's just mean of her SIL to say, lol!

I had a boss that said that her granddaughter was so ugly/weird looking that she had a bunch of genetic testing done and she was completely normal.  She turned out to be a normal looking kid.

  • When our second son was born we outwardly acknowledged that he was very funny looking. But we didn't say, 'ugly'.

Oh.My.GOSH! Did they just get genetic testing done because of her looks? That's so sad.

  • Ds wasn't the cutest as a brand new newborn.  He had a funky nose, huge eyes and hair all over his body.  I loved him so much, but I definitely remember thinking "Boy, I hope he gets cuter".

Maybe she was feeling a little insecure and wanted you to jump in and reassure her that her kid was cute?

  • My baby was so puffy and swollen and she never opened her eyes.  I didn't think she was cute.  Loved her to pieces instantly and if anyone told me she was less than stunning I would have kicked them in the labia, but I didn't think she was cute until a few days later when she looked less squished.

  • I can't relate.  Mine has always been crazy cute.
  • My youngest was pretty funny looking. So was my middle child. They're both cute now. There are plenty more things to get your panties in a wad over than if a friend said her baby was ugly. If she said it to her face when she's older, that's different, but I highly doubt it is scarring her for life.
  • A friend of mine who has 2 grown kids now always says this about her kids. That when they where babies they where just ugly. She said she didn't see it than because they where her babies. Now that she looks back she knows how funky they looked as newborns.

I remember in my expectant parenting class the teacher talking about this. She said don't be surprised if your baby isn't as cute as ones you see on TV. Babies come out with wrinkles, bruises, cuts, sagging skin. It's just a fact of life. I never did know what she was talking about. DD was a cutie from birth. :)

Monk wasn't that cute the first 4 weeks or so. However, at the time I thought he was the bees knees :)
