Clomid RX for anovulatory only?

I'm confused by Clomid and its uses.   Is it prescribed mainly for anovulatory cycles? or do doctors give it to people who ovulate regularly each month too?

I was never prescribed Clomid and have normal 28 day ovulatory cycles, but I'm wondering if it would have worked for me....the fertility doc never really suggested I take it

I only decided to proceed with IVF (next month-11th cycle) because my husband's ins essentially picks up the entire tab and he's switching jobs and then no more full coverage for IUI + IVF etc..

Re: Clomid RX for anovulatory only?

  • we were prescribed clomid when TTC #1 because i was anovulatory. this time, however, i was ovulating on my own, but we are still doing clomid again. the RE suggested that it makes a "better" ovulation.

  • It absolutely can increase ovulatory follicles, help lengthen LP defects, help for a "stronger/better" ovulation (meaning get that egg OUT there instead of a floppy ovulation where the egg and sperm may never meet which is sometimes indicated by low P4 at 7dpo).

There are lots of reasons why. Its a pretty "safe" drug as far as low doses yeild low multis (or so they say statistically) so docs are less hesitant to use it.
  • I typically ovulate on my own without any problems.   My RE prescribed Clomid to me while we try a couple of cycles of IUI and he said it was to help improve the eggs I had as well as it could help with my luteal phase defect as well.

  • Clomid with IUI increases chances for unexplained infertility and male factor too.  I have twenty eight day cycles but have only gotten pregnant with IUI and Clomid.
