Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

You would want to know this, right?

A new daycare opened in our town this week, and an acquaintence of mine's kids (ages 4 & 7) go there.  Today I was at the pool & saw some kids from the daycare there.  A LOT OF KIDS.  With four incompetent looking adults, who pretty much let the kids have the run of the place while they chatted and watched the youngest ones.  Not only were the kids shoving other kids & just being generally rude, but I really felt like the kids were in danger.  At one point, a little girl was found sobbing, alone and scared.  One of the ladies finally got to her after being paged.  Then when I was in the pool, a little boy (maybe 3) was too far out & was screaming/sputtering and kept going under water.  I fished him out & finally determined he came from that group.  When I brought him back, one of the ladies yelled at him for "going past the line."

I should tell the person I know whose kids were with that group, right?  Anything else I should do?

TIA

  • I would call the daycare and ask to talk to the supervisor/boss/whatever they call the highest person there. A stranger having to fish a 3-year-old out of a pool is unacceptable - that kid could have drowned!

  • Yeaaahh, I would call your acquaintence and tell them ASAP. This is need-to-know information!!!!!
  • Yes, I would want to know.

  • um..that's terrifying.  i would definitely tell your friend or the person you know.  and if you know the name of the daycare, i'd report them.

  • I would absolutely want to know, and I'd probably also call the director of the daycare.  That is incredibly unsafe.

  • Generally I tend to stay out of things but this is definitely a situation where I would feel compelled to call the person I know as well as the daycare itself to speak to whoever is in charge.
  • Oh definitely tell your friend about what happened. What kind of daycare lets a 3 year old go into the water by themselves? Regardless of whether they could swim or not-that's really dangerous.

I would also call the daycare to speak to the manager and let her know that you encountered the group while out and that you saw some things that were less than impressive.

I agree w/ this too. You know which daycare it is and you witnessed this yourself.  Based on what you said, this literally could be a life and death issue.

This.  As a former lifeguard who had to jump in to save a drowning 4-year-old when his dad was about three feet away, back turned on his cell, I've gotta say I'd take this to the top and report it.  I think all too often people think they can use lifeguards as babysitters, but it's really not the case.

  • I have actually worked in a daycare setting before, and IMO this is totally unacceptable of them! If it is a licensed daycare, they should have a certain amount of adults per children for the children's safety. It sounds like from your description that ratio wasn't accurate. Also, shouting across the daycare at a child is absurd! They should have walked over to the child who "crossed the line," told him what he was doing wrong and that it was dangerous, and redirected him. JEESH!

  • Yes tell them and report it to the supervisor of the daycare.

Not to mention that using a "don't cross the line" theory instead of actually supervising THREE-YEAR OLDS in a pool is absurd.

This. They have a right to know that they have some lazy-assses working there.

  • I would tell my friend, call the director and report the daycare to the state's licensing boards.

    Yes

  • I would ABSOLUTELY want to know! I hate seeing stuff like that. It is scary to think what could happen when there are too many kids on a little trip and too few adults!
  • I agree with calling the state - just calling the daycare won't necessarily get them to change.  If they're doing this, they're probably doing plenty of other hazardous things.  I wouldn't trust them to handle the problem internally.

  • OMG... I would definitely speak with your friend.  I would also contact the school and speak with head director and owner (if this center is a franchise and has an owner).  The director needs to know that their new employees are not following daycare guidelines and are setting a poor example for any future employees.
