What would you buy/pack? babyfood/BLW question

We're leaving for Colorado early friday AM and will be gone through Monday night. We've got a pretty packed schedule, and nearly every meal we'll be eating out... but sometimes it will be fast food (subway or whatever) and I don't want her to be mostly devoid of fruit/veggies for 4 days, kwim? I thought about just buying some jars of stage 3 fruits/veggies to balance out the rest, but we've done BLW from day one (errr... day 6 months on, lol) so I honestly don't even know if she would eat baby food.

I've seen those gerber "toddler meals" but they have not much veggies/fruit and a lot of protein/carb- and I'm not worried about her carb/protein intake, I know she'll get plenty of that..and while I *prefer* organic stuff for her, I'm willing to get something like the Gerber meals for the weekend... I just wish they had more veggies!

I know it's not a HUGE deal in the grand scheme of things if she doens't eat the perfect diet this weekend, she is still nursing. But she eats a lot of solids and a good variety, I would like to offer her some healthier things if possible...

  • For things like that we take those pouches of fruit/vege that have like a straw on them and squeeze out.  Mish mashes I think they are called.  They are delicious, easy to pack, and in a pinch round out a meal nicely.

  • Will you pack her a little cooler?  Or does it have to be stuff that doesn't need to be cold?

If you are driving and can take along a cooler: cheese like gouda, cheddar, swiss in hunks, fresh fruits cut in half (peaches, nectarines, tomatoes), steam then pack cold some veggies (doubt she'll care that they aren't hot) like squash and broccoli.

I've never heard of those! Where do you buy them? Emmy likes drinking from straws.

We won't be taking her a cooler... we aren't taking a stroller, so we've got to pack light ;) And part of the problem is I don't think we can take pre-cooked veggies and stuff on the airplane.. and we won't be able to cook them once we are there, kwim? We can always throw a banana in the diaper bag, but she can't eat ONLY bananas for 4 days, lol.

  • BRU/TRU has them - there's more than one brand.  I think its Ella Organics that makes them in flavors like carrot/apple.  They are basically purees and DD hates purees, but the novelty apparently makes them acceptable.

ETA: we like the mish mash and "just fruit" Plum Organic ones.  Havent tried the others.

  • Yeah, if I try to feed Emmy anything she will stick her tongue out, scrape whatever food is on it off, inspect it, and then either stick it back in her mouth if it looks acceptable or throw if off the highchair and say, "DOG!!" lol but the purees in a pouch might work! And I won't have to worry about glass breaking in the diaper bag.

Bingo - easy to pack.  And try and get the toddler "snacks" they are thicker/chunkier and less puree.

  • Can't you stop and buy food once you are there? That would probably be the easiest.

Well, if you eat at Subway, there are all kinds of things she can eat there - black olives, bell peppers, tomatoes, cheese, cucumbers, etc. I will usually get DS a veggie sandwich and just let him pick what he wants to eat (he won't eat meat).

Fred listed lots of different fruits you can bring along that don't need to be refrigerated. I would definitely bring those along.

I usually bring some kind of trail mix with dried fruit and nuts.

As for veggies - I don't know. A lot of places offer veggies for sides though. Don't french fries count as veggies? (just kidding). You can get carrot sticks and just cut them (or bite them for her) into small pieces.

  • she still doesn't have any teeth, I think she'd just swallow raw carrot chunks whole, lol. That's a problem with a lot of raw veggies...

We are buying food once we get there, sorry if that wasn't clear. But we'll be gone from early AM to late at night, so it will still need to be food we can pack in the diaper bag that will be good all day, kwim?

lol - okay - this info helps. I was thinking you needed food for the whole trip.

What about apple sauce? It doesn't need to be refrigerated. You could also get the fruit packs that are packed in sugar syrup ;)
