Infertility

Let's talk follie sizes in regards to IUI

This is my 3rd IUI cycle. I'm doing the same drug regimen for all of them (femara + trigger.)

First IUI: one follie, about 16.5mm

Second IUI: one follie, about 19.5mm

I just had my CD11 u/s this morning, and I have two follies, one at 14.81, and the other at 12.25. My RE is not checking the size again until the actual IUI (on Sunday morning). I'm a bit concerned, as these sizes do not seem very big. Also, while I would looove to have two follies, the 12.25 sounds really really small.

How big were your follies at your cd11 u/s, and if you had any towards the smaller range (12-14), did those actually grow?

Re: Let's talk follie sizes in regards to IUI

  • I don't remember exact sizes on or around that day but they do grow 1-2 mm per day & you have 5 days left for them to increase in size. GL to you. I didn't respond well to femara so I moved onto injections.
  • Loading the player...
  • Did she have you trigger? Or are you ovulating on your own?

Follies can grow 1-2 MM a day, and even after the trigger shot they will grow.

So you still have 4 days @ 1-2 MM so the 14 (could be in the 20's) and the 12 ( also could be 18-20)

Your going to get alot of answers, as not all cycles are the same. My last IUI I didn't do an IUI until count 20.

Oh and on my BFP cycle, I had 2 mature (over 18) and 1 at 14 and got pregnant with triplets. So yes the smaller ones will grow.

    Good luck Big Smile

  • It seems odd to me (based on my exp) that you are not being checked again before your trigger/IUI.  Sunday is a long time away.  Did they tell you why?  I was always checked the day of trigger (to make sure I had one >18mm), though we didn't know which day I would be ready in advance.  GL!

  • I'll trigger on Friday night.

I asked her about not checking again until the IUI on Sunday. She said that it wasn't needed, that on average they grow 2mm/day. She has more of a minimalist approach to medicine...that unless there is a drastically proven need, no dice.

Well, mine don't grow at an average rate. They start off really slow and then they take off. Yes, the smaller ones matured.

ETA : what's a "drastically proven need" ? OHSS? Triggering at the wrong time with immature or overmature follies?

I honestly have no idea...your guess is as good as mine Wink

But I do know that my scenario is not included in the "drastically proven need"

  • My RE won't move forward unless the follies are at 18mm when I trigger.  So if they aren't they will keep monitoring me until they are and trigger when they are big enough or if they stop growing they will cancel my cycle.

What if they stop growing between now and Sunday and never mature?  Then you will just be wasting a trigger shot because you won't end up moving forward.

Well, even though you're probably not going to die, It's still nice to know that you're triggering at the optimal time, that you're responding well, and that your estrogen levels are rising as they should. FWIW I didn't trigger on the same day for my IUIs, and I didn't respond exactly the same way, even though the medication and dosing were the same.

  • Mine were at 18 and 17 today and I'm triggering tonight.  Last time they were 20 & 18, the time before around 20 and the first time around 18.  It's a little odd they won't check again before the IUI.

  • Sunday does seem like kind of a long time to let them grow without checking them. Every cycle has been different for me but here were my sizes this cycle (if I remember right, sometimes I totally forget the actual sizes but it'll be close):

    CD12 I had 2 at about 12-14 and 2 small ones

    CD15 I had 2 at about 18 and a smaller one about 14 maybe?

Triggered on CD17 after giving them 2 more days to grow and IUI on CD19.

  • Thanks all. I agree with the not wanting to waste an IUI if they aren't growing at an appropiate rate.

I went ahead and left a message with the nurse that I'd be interested in being seen again to make sure they are growing enough before I trigger. She'll speak to the dr tomorrow morning and call me back.

  • I didn't have my follie check until 12 or 13, I had three last time.  All around 20mm.

But again, I was on clomid and that is a few days later.  They could've been 15-16 on my day 11.
