Reco for Extra Wide Gate on Stairs

I just posted this on my Local Board, but thought you might be able to help me over here, too. TIA!

The bottom of my stairs flair out at the bottom. I think it's about 60" wide. The wood post on one side is straight, but the wood post on the other side is at an angle.  This makes it extremely difficult to find something that will work. Any suggestions?

Re: Reco for Extra Wide Gate on Stairs

  • We have Summer Extendable Gates (from BRU) - they have worked great for us and our open floor plan.
  • Loading the player...
  • Our staircase does this too, and we had a time figuring out what kind of gate to use. Here's a pic of our stairs:

We went with the North State extra wide swing gate from Wal-mart. It was just $40. We also had to use the Kidco bannister kit to mount the hardware on the bannister side (which cost almost as much as the gate itself, but we didn't really have a choice!).

We mounted a strip of oak on the wall side, to mount the hardware on. (Eyelet screws that the gate hooks hook onto). I initially mounted it right into the drywall, but when I slipped on the stairs and ripped it out of the wall, I realized it wasn't secure enough that way! ETA: as you can see, the wall is at an angle. We just put the eyelet screws in to the strip of wood at an angle on that side, it wasn't a problem at all.

After DD goes to bed, we completely take the gate off, very easily. I love that part about it. I wish I had a pic of the actual gate up, but I don't... I had this pic on my phone, from when I was posting on my local board asking for recs! If a pic of it would help, let me know, and I'll take one.

    HTH!

Thank you!! This is EXACTLY like my stairs, except I have a bannster on both sides. That's great to know that you can take the gate completely off without any problems. Oh, I just looked at the link and the gate does not have a swing door. Pooh! My DH wants a hands-free door. Thank you so much for the help!
