Suggestions for Making Hotel Stays Easier

Saturday night we went to Yakima for a wedding and our hotel stay was almost as bad as I had feared.  Jillian is a great sleeper in her crib when she gets to bed on time around 8pm and gets a good nap.  She had not slept any place except her crib since October.  Saturday night we got to our hotel at 10pm.  Jillian had slept for about 1 hour on our drive over as opposed to her usual 2-3 hour nap.

We started by attempting to put Jillian in her pack and play.  Crying ensued.  And while I will let her CIO at home, it seemed rather rude to our neighbors to attempt that at a hotel.  So then Jeramy tried sleeping with her in one bed and I was going to sleep with Hayden in another.  Turned out the lights.  She wiggled and ran to my bed.  Ran back to Jeramy's bed.  Jeramy and I switched beds.  I tried singing her to sleep.  She calmed a bit and ran to Jeramy's bed.  She climbs all over and wakes Hayden up.  I take Hayden into my bed whom promptly falls back asleep.  Finally Jillian crashes out.  She wakes up at 1am screaming.  Probably night terrors.  She calms down and I turn out the light again.  Screaming commences again.  Finally she fell asleep until 6am or so.  Sunday sucked with a grumpy toddler and irritable toddler.  Hayden who slept great was happy as a clam.

We are doing this all over again in a few weeks for another wedding.  Any tips or is it pretty much going to suck again.  I'm soooooo glad that I refused to go for more than one night.

Re: Suggestions for Making Hotel Stays Easier

  • OMG your siggy is sooo cute!!

Sorry about your awful night!  I don't have much advise for you, the only time we have ever gone someplace we either find a house to rent or a suite with a room.  He has to CIO in places like that too.  Maybe just let her CIO though if she can see you there isn't much point : (

  • Loading the player...
  • Get a 2 bedroom suite or adjoining rooms. That's the only way we can stay in a hotel as our DD won't sleep in the same room as us. Or we opt for a vacation rental (condo, cabin, etc) with two sleeping areas.
  • We've traveled a fair bit with DS and find just keeping to your normal routine as much as possible is the best thing.
Could you leave earlier so that you are not checking into the hotel late? this would help in sticking to routine.
Does Jillian have a special blankey/toy that she could take with her? A favorite book that you read at bed time?
I would let her CIO too - maybe take a noise distractor with you too! Good luck, hope it's easier for you next time around!

  • I think that for a longer trip we would definitely do a condo or two bedroom suite.  For the wedding in a few weeks we are just going to have to suck it up for a night.

This past weekend we did bring her favorite stuffed animals and blankets, but they didn't seem to make a difference.  Maybe they would have in a situation where we could have let her CIO.  We had checked into the hotel earlier but didn't get back from the wedding until well after Jillian's bedtime.

About the only solution that sounds good for the next wedding would be to get an overnight babysitter and go ourselves.  But Jillian looks so damn cute out on the dance floor!
