Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Long flight tomorrow...any words of wisdom?

I could kill my H. We are flying from VA to FL tomorrow. There are tons of direct flights. H, being the saver that he is, decided to draw this process out as long as possible. We leave at 10 am, lay over in Atlanta for a couple of hours and then fly to FL. We don't arrive until 4 pm! I'm soo not looking forward to this. Any advice from those that have done a long trip? I planning to bring as many 'quiet' toys as possible and lots of snacks.

  • A portable DVD player worked wonders for us on our trip from TX to NY

  • I would put diaper rash cream on your baby right before you board. My son had a dirty diaper, and the fasten seatbelt sign didn't go off because of the threat of major turbulence. I never did get to change his diaper for over an hour until we got off the plane, and the poor baby had a horrible diaper rash.

Also, I never board until the last possible second. If I'm traveling with someone, I'll have them pre-board. The last place I want to be is cooped up on an airplane with a toddler any longer than I have to be. You never know if you'll board and then have to wait to take off.

Love this idea! H can sit on the plane and wait for us. His punishment for saving money. Wink

  • Bring a sippy cup and fill it with water once you get through security.  You will need it for landings to make the baby swallow.  Also you need something to distract the baby with while they are drinking so they stop worrying about their ears.  I would save it only for landings.  We used DVD's of her favorite shows.

  • I haven't flown with DS yet, but my SIL buys cheap toys (like from the Target dollar bins) and wraps them up in birthday wrapping paper for her LOs to unwrap on the plane.  I thought it was weird... until I had a child.  lol
  • We've flown a ton....

    Overnight diapers for sure.

The airline should check your car seat for free.

You can bring any amount of liquids (of any type) through security for him - they will test the air above them and will not touch anything.  It's very easy.  The 3 oz rule isn't for medical need or babies.  Bring snacks too!  Puffs can still buy me a lot of time.

Put toys on rings so you can corral them in the tight space and they don't all end up on the floor

I bring 2 or 3 toys, a book he will read a million times, and a magazine - he has a great time ripping apart the magazine and looking at the pictures.  A huge number of toys will just make you crazy.

Carry on as little as possible - I stick my own stuff in the diaper bag so I don't need a purse.  It makes getting through security and getting on and off the plane much easier.

If there is something comforting (like a bottle or snack) that you can do when you first get on the plane, that will probably help.

Take a deep breath and stay calm.  Sometimes they lose it and there's just nothing you can do about it.  Most people understand and are very nice about it.  You can't stay home forever!

  • Put everything you can in the seat pockets in front of you.  Stickers are also a huge hit, DS put them on me, himself, the Sky Miles magazine, the sticker book, and pretty much everywhere else.
  • Great tips! Thanks.
  • I have nothing to add since we haven't flown with DD yet, but want to save the ideas for later!
  • I just flew from St. Louis to Kauai last week - no problems (13 hours travel time).  DS enjoyed putting my hair bands on his wrist and arms, loved his magnadoodle, chugged water, and ate snacks constantly.  We gate-checked our carseat and stroller (free/easy).  The planes didn't have a changing stations, so we had to put his pad on the floor by the rear bathroom for diaper changes.

We used DH's phone to play videos.  We couldn't get DS to wear headphones, but no one seemed bothered by the low volume (it was no louder than some people's headphones that were blasting ON their ears).

    good luck.
