Pregnant after IF

question about NT and glucose

I had my first OB appointment.  It went well, it was with the nurse for history etc. and i meet with the dr. tomorrow.  I was worried b/c since moving, we now live in a small town and I had to find a new doctor.  THey were awesome about the IVF stuff, blood clotting issues etc.  THe nurse said she was going to call my RE in OH to get some more info.

Questions though: They don't do the 12 week NT scan.  They do a 16 week quad screen / AFP.  She said if I want an NT I can talk to the Dr tomorrow and arrange it.  What do you think?  I'm 34 and we would not terminate if the child has downs.  We also would not do amnio if the results came back high risk.

DO you think the 16 week one is enough?  It seems like everyone on here does the NT.

Also - because my father has diabetes (type 2 though) they want me to do the 1 hour glucose tomorrow and then repeat it again later on (like 27 weeks I think).  B/c we have a history they want to monitor me closely even though I am not overweight.

Anyone else do this?  It doesn't bother me b/c I guess they are being overly cautious vs. conservative but just curious.

Re: question about NT and glucose

  • There are disorders other than downs that the NT scan picks up. I honestly thought it was just downs and trisomy 18 at first, but friends of ours just had their NT scan and found out their child has sirenomelia (aka mermaid syndrome). It's legs are fused together and (upon further testing they discovered) that there are organs missing.

The baby's condition is terminal and so they are terminating before 16 weeks (after which point they would have to do a live delivery.

Anyway, I'm not telling you all this to scare you as their condition is a 1 in 100,000 chance and is extremely rare, but there are other things that come up in these tests and some of them seem to have no choice other than termination.

I guess if it were me, I would find out what they can detect and pick up with the 16 week. If it is the same essentially as the 12 wk scan then maybe wait. Again, the only separation being that a termination can happen before 16 wks, after 16 wks you have to do a live delivery. (Sorry to be so morose!)

  • Most insurances won't pay for the NT scan unless it is necessary so be careful.  My friend was over 35 and just wanted an u/s and had to pay for it.  she was upset.  I never had to pay for mine.  I am 37 and pg now (2nd baby).  it's just another chance to see the baby.  can they see stuff at the 18wk anatomy scan - yeah, but you can see stuff ahead of time ---i think most on here get them due to AMA and not to terminate (KWIM?).  I think you might check with insurance since you are younger than 35.  They aren't necessary.  I didn't get one with my first pg and I was 34 - I was supposed to but that is another story.  I got 2 NT scans only because I had to or they wouldn't insert my cerclage.

On the GD front.  I was tested at 8wks due to having GD in my prior pregnancy and then at 28wks.  (and then the 3hr at 29wks).  I am skinny and I have GD, so with family history you never know.  ;)

  • hum, good point Nikki.  The 16 week screening is all done through blood and history / age etc.  Its not an u/s.

I'll ask tomorrow about pros / cons.  Once I see the dr. they may change their minds anyways and have me do it since I am borderline AMA at 34.  We do have an ultrasound tomorrow but its just a regular one.
