is this a big deal? I was thinking of "repurposing" a (not tall) dresser we have that has shallow drawers into a changing table. It's wide enough but doesn't really have drawers deep enough for adult clothes. I was thinking of painting it white and using it in the nursery as a dresser/changer. I see a lot of changing tables without rails, and I'm not an idiot so I wouldn't walk away from LO on the table even for a second....

That's what we are doing. We're not painting it or anything but we're getting a change pad that has the side the stick up as opposed to something with rails. It has a sticky bottom so that it stays on the dresser and there are others that you can attach to the dresser with safety straps but that involves some handiwork.
