is this a big deal? I was thinking of "repurposing" a (not tall) dresser we have that has shallow drawers into a changing table. It's wide enough but doesn't really have drawers deep enough for adult clothes. I was thinking of painting it white and using it in the nursery as a dresser/changer. I see a lot of changing tables without rails, and I'm not an idiot so I wouldn't walk away from LO on the table even for a second....

For most changing tables, the rails wouldn't even keep the baby from rolling out. The rails probably don't even come even with the top of the changing pad. I don't think that the rails do much to help the changing pad not move either. I would say that a dresser would work great!

Totally fine. That's what we use. It almost seems like the rails would be a nuisance while changing, but I've don't have one so I don't know

For DD #1 we just used a dresser that was the right height. We will do the same again. I wouldn't worry to much about it because as PP pointed out the rails never are higher than the changing pad.

That's what we are doing. We're not painting it or anything but we're getting a change pad that has the side the stick up as opposed to something with rails. It has a sticky bottom so that it stays on the dresser and there are others that you can attach to the dresser with safety straps but that involves some handiwork.

Should not be a problem, just get a changing pad with edges that curve up. This is what we are doing.

We are planning on doing a dresser too. If you get the 4-in-1 crib why not extend your changing table too? I have never seen a mother actually use the snapping belt on their child. You want to change the kiddo quickly and you have to have everything you need right there. Otherwise you cannot leave the kiddo on there. I would not even trust one of those straps!

I did this for DD. It was no problem. The only thing to keep in mind is that you may not have space to place wipes on top, so you are going to either need a diaper stacker to hang on the side or some sort of shelving above.

That's what I plan on doing as well. I love Craigslist so hopefully I can find a cute double dresser that I can repaint and put new hardware on.

As long as you put a changing table mat on top that has the curved "walls" (bad description, but you know what I mean) you should be totally fine. Lots of people do that to make their dresser into a changer. If the surface of the dresser is pretty shallow though, I'd probably try to find a way to secure the mat on there.

Yeah it wouldn't really matter as most said the rails are high enough to keep the baby in... I also plan of just using the top of a dresser for a changing table

I'm getting the changing pad (with sides) that you can secure to the top of a dresser. Totally acceptable IMO. Not acceptable? Stepping away from the baby while its on the changing table, railing or not.
