OMG! Daycare Vent and Question (long)

Ok, DH says I'm overreacting...

I sent Max to daycare yesterday in this jumper and, as usual, when he was picked up he had been changed into something else and his jumper was in a plastic baggie.

Well, I went to wash the jumper last night and took it out of the bag and it had bleach spots all over it!!!!  I was FURIOUS!!  I work hard so that I can dress my family in nice clothes (amongst other things) and that jumper was BRAND NEW!

I figured that maybe they sprayed it with a pretreater that reacted badly with the fabric of the jumper and asked DH to tell them not to spray anything on Max's clothes anymore when he dropped Max off this morning.

I just got a call from DH who told me that daycare said that Max spit up on a mat yesterday while playing and it is their policy to wipe any bodily fluids that get on the mats with bleach.  Well, when they did this Max was too quick and crawled through the bleach and that's how the stains got on his jumper.

I am really really angry right now...they let my son crawl through bleach on the floor????!???!?!?  I'm confused and seriously ready to find a new daycare over this!

Am I overreacting?

Re: OMG! Daycare Vent and Question (long)

  • I don't think so. They didn't even let you know that he had crawled through bleach when you picked him up? I would be furious. He could have gotten it on his hands and put them in his mouth.

  • I don't think you're over-reacting. Your child should NOT be crawling around in bleach. That was very negligent of them, IMO. And they should have mentioned it to you as well.

THIS! I would be furious and on the phone with the director so fast her head would be spinning! That is SO EFFING DANGEROUS! Your son (and all other children) should have been removed from the area while they sprayed it down.

  • I would not be happy with them for putting him next to bleach. That was careless. Who sprays bleach next to a baby? It could irritate his skin.

Have they done anything else that has bothered you in the past?

I understand accidents happen but who leaves a child on the floor near you while you are using bleach and if the child crawls through it the parents should be notified. I would call the director of that daycare and complain. That is pure stupidity to have children around while using bleach!

I am going to call the director but really have no idea what to say...I am not good at confrontation like this because I always feel like I'm dramatizing the situation.

    What should I say?

Also, Max started standing in his crib about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they have made it known to us that it's VERY stressful for them and that they are at their witt's end with trying to get him to nap (he's a self soother that has been putting himself to sleep since 2 months old)  They haven't come out and actually said that he's stressing them out but we can tell by the way they say things regarding his day.  Anyway, 2 weeks ago MIL picked him up from daycare and he had a bruise/blackish eye on the corner of one of his eyes.  Nobody knew anything about it and nobody knew what it was from.  I went in the next morning and the morning teacher said that he was flailing himself around his crib and must have banged his eye.  I didn't like the answer but believe that it was a possibility...I was just confused as to why he was left to flail around in his crib.  He is NOT a difficult baby and never cries and I've never seen him flail around his crib at home.

I just don't know what to do!

  • In my opinion you are not over reacting at all.  I can't believe they are wiping things down at your daycare with bleach, and when the babies are there!  Can't they wait and wipe things down when they leave at night time?  I would be furious that my son was crawling around on bleach and that they had ruined a brand new outfit!

Are they kidding?  Isn't it their job and why you pay them to watch your child all day?  I would have been pissed at that comment alone!!

With your OP I was shocked, but would have talked to the director and given them another change.  But with what you posted above...RUN, take your kid and RUN!  That place does not sound right at all!  I just get an uneasy feeling from what you wrote.  Honestly, I'm usually the one thinking many girls on here are over reacting with daycare stuff, but with this I think you are right to leave....if that tells you anything.  Good luck!

  • I learned very early on that outfits that you absolutely do not want soiled or possibly ruined should never be worn to DC.  I've thrown out several of the boys' outfits because I just couldn't get the poop/paint/etc. out of them.

Also, when the DC said they sprayed bleach, it's likely a diluted bleach solution that is safe (just like the Clorox gentle stuff that can be used around LOs).  I've had some of the boys' clothes come home with bleached out spots because they put them on the changing pad when the solution hadn't 100% dried yet.  I don't know about your DC, but at ours, if any of the LOs are even suspected to have gotten some on them, they wash their hands (or whatever gets in it) immediately with soap and water.

Remember they have to sanitize.  Unless they're doing something totally crazy, I'm sure what they're using is safe around babies.  It sucks that you had a jumper ruined but from now on I'd just not send your LO to DC in anything nice.  If you're concerned about the sanitizer, talk to the director.  I'm sure he/she would be happy to talk to you.  If not, THEN I'd start to worry.  When they're not open and honest about things is when you should start looking for a new DC.

  • Get out of there as fast as you can.

  • I would tell the director that I was unhappy about the bleach situation. Hands down, that was a preventable situtation. Then I would express my displeasure about his eye. You should be able to leave your child with their DCP and know that they are safe. Tell her that. I am not a confrontational person either. But, when it come to my baby, watch out!

I would also start the search for a different DCP. If they think he is unmanagable, maybe they are not the right choice.

  • I understand that the dc has to clean, especially when bodily fluids are involved, but I would call and confirm that his hands were washed and that the solution is safe to be around babies.

That being said, the further comments you made about max being stressful would make me start looking other places.  I know our situation is different b/c we use an in home dcp, but we've never had any issues what so ever.  Even when she was going through WW19 (which most of us know is awful), my dcp simply said, "Boy, she's just not herself.  Guess I'll make some adjustments to make her comfortable."  And when she got her first "owie," dcp knew exactly what happened, and she was so distraught over it, I thought she was going to cry.  Sounds to me like they just are giving Max enough time and patience.

  • Sounds like it's an excuse. I worked at a daycare for years and we never did anything like that. I wonder if something else actually happened. Plus, anything we did ever use with bleach was deluted in a spray bottle. There must have been a TON of bleach on the mat for it to cause staining. I would raise a fuss with them and have them reimburse you for the jumper. Are they really that dense that they didn't know that bleach would stain clothing?! Ugh I am frustrated for you!
  • 1. you are not over reacting

    2. i would call and simply say: "i am calling to address what happened yesterday regarding max.  he was sent home in a different outfit than he went in with and i was not told the entire story.  why did i not find out that he crawled trhough bleach sanitizer until this morning when my husband had to ask about his clothes?  it is my understanding that i am to be given a run down of his day when i pick him up, and i do not feel that this is happening."  and see what they say.

    3. i would be looking for a new dcp

    4. always go with your gut, mommy instinct knows best.

  • OMG. They are stupid.

I work in daycare---when a child pukes, one person takes the child away to get cleaned up and another CLEARS THE AREA of children and cleans the spill.

WTF were they thinking just spraying bleach on the throw up while they just left your child sitting there? Also, the child comes first before the "spill" and should have been picked up as soon as someone noticed he threw up.

    BUT>>>>>

daycare is messy. Kids are messy. We always made it VERY clear to all our parents that any clothes they sent their child in needed to be clothes that they were ok with getting dirty and possibly ruined. Daycare is not the place for fancy, best outfits...it's a place for things that may get wrecked. Kids play with paint, run around outside, spill bubbles, eat by themselves and get food on their shirt, etc. You shouldn't have sent him in the jumper if you would get that upset that it got stained.

I'd be pissed. There was no reason that your child should have been able to crawl through bleach - even diluted bleach. If the bleach was strong enough to ruin his clothes he shouldn't have been anywhere near it. As far as the bruised eye, kids get bumps and bruises. It's nearly impossible to avoid that at home or at daycare. BUT, daycare should have known how he got the bruise and they should have told you about it. I'd talk to the director about both. I hate confrontation, too. I'm just not good at it, so I try to plan in advance what I want to say. I might also start looking at different daycare centers. We switched our daughter to a different place, mostly because I felt something was off. I'm much happier with our current daycare. Trust your mommy instincts.

  • I was just going to say "oh well it's one outfit, set them straight not to pretreat so it doesn't happen again"... But then I read he crawled through the bleach?  Why wouldn't they move him from the area BEFORE they clean.  I'd get some serious answers.
