Military Families

anyone know...?

Does anyone know if the military is considered a Not For Profit organization?

I am a Family Readiness Assistant for my hubby's Marine Reserve Unit and we're planning our family day.  I'm trying to solicit donations of goods (ie: water, soda, hot dogs, burgers, etc) for the family day, but all the websites say they'll only donate to a non-profit organization.  I'll still write letters to our local stores and whatnot (acting clueless about this requirement!) but I was just curious if anyone on here might know the answer or know of any stores in Central PA that might be willing to donate some goods.

 Thanks, ladies! :)

No.  The military is a governmental organization, not a 501(c)3.

  • The Military isn't, but FRGs and FRAs can be.  It depends on how yours is set up.  You need to talk to the person in charge and see if your FRA is classified as one.  Ours is.

  • DON does not allow us to do outside fundraising you will need to check the OPNAV or Marine Instruction as well as the Joint Ethics Review.

Requesting donations is prohibited in the JER. Also, we have to maintain "BOOFOO" (by our own, for our own) status in order to be a command endourced organization.

We get around it by going to the USO (which is huge here) when we need help.

  • I know with Army FRG's we are NOT allowed to solicit for donations at all.  I'm not sure if the regs are similar across branches, but I would check to make sure if I were you.
