Why would you do that? I mean, is it a culture thing or were you just trying to be creative and make sure that no one would ever spell their names correctly for as long as they live?
I get asked why I didn't spell Alissa's name "Alyssa." I don't think I spelled hers creatively though, just didn't use the normal spelling. Though she is doomed to a life of "Alissa with and i" and not having personalized stuff.
DD1 has a unique spelling for her name and I absolutely HATE it. I let DH talk me into it and have regretted it since day 1. No one even knows how to say her name. DH's reasoning was that he wants people to know that she's a girl when they see the name since her name is traditionally a boy's name.

What is the name???
Her name is Evan. We spell it Evynne. I don't think I will ever get over my dislike of the spelling. DH actually wanted to spell it Ehvyne, so I suppose that this spelling looked awesome in comparison. I love her name, but wish I would've stood my ground.
I got the spelling of Mychal from a family friend who was a firefighter and killed in the 9/11 attacks. His name was spelled that way.
And to tell you the truth, the way I spelled their names are not that difficult. Anyone with a brain could spell them. No one has had a problem spelling them yet. Well, except Aaeleigh's name but she passed away 3 years ago so her name is only on her headstone.
My oldest has an uncommonly spelled middle name (Eireann pronounced Erin). I swear people give me looks until I explain that it is the gaelic spelling and a family name.
The only name we have spelled differently is Kaydance. We wanted Kay because my MIL mn is Kay and I think its a pretty name in case she wants to shorten her name. I didnt want her to be a Caddy/Caddie etc. Then ending is dh input. I was sticking with ence but he wanted ance. He polled the nurses and they all voted ance as well. I was out numbered and dont hate it so I let dh have his way. I do think it looks pretty though.
A friend of mine named her little girl Caidence Rayne. (rain)
I also know a girl who has a Brooke-lynne Skyy (as in the vodka) She just had a little boy and named him Bronkx. I forget the middle name but its a common name.

And it's pronounced A-Lee
oh, dear. I'm sorry to hear that. I'll stop by for my a-hole door prize bucket of shame now...
Re: I see the extra letter in names are still popular
I've probably been asked by at least 20 people why I didn't spell DD's name "Dayna." Uhhhh, because Dana is the proper spelling.
I spelled my kids names kind of weird.
Trevor Mychal (this spelling instead of Michael)
Kaydence (instead of Cadence)
Aaeleigh (instead of the Ailey)
