Moms of crappy sleepers

Do you BF?

I'm curious to see if there is any correlation between BFing and waking throughout the night.

I'm still BFing, and my kid wakes every couple hours looking for the boob. She's a boob-crazed maniac.

Seriously, I doubt I'll ever be able to wean her.

  • Oh, also...

Does your LO sleep with a pacifier? Mine does not. She's never had a pacifier (unless you count my boobs)

  • I weaned at 7 months because my supply tanked. DS was a crappy sleeper before and continues to be a crappy sleeper well into his second year of life.

  • I still BF and DD wakes up about 2-3 times each night and she wakes trying to find my bood as well. We co-sleep most times and if I don't get it to her fast enough she starts sucking my face or chest lol   ... I don't see weaning anytime soon

  • I do BF but I hesitate to blame bad sleep on BF... I'm letting him self wean so if there is a correlation, I'm screwed Tongue Tied  DS has STTN before- multiple times but never consistently.  His sleep patterns are all over the place and pretty bad now.

she never took one I am the official pacifier

  • After DS turned one, I stopped BFing him during the night. He STTN now :) I had to have DH soothe him back to sleep for a week or so until DS stopped waking up hungry.

DS took a pacifier early on, until about 5 months then he switched to thumb sucking.  I haven't noticed a difference in his sleep patterns becuase of this.

This! EXACTLY except I have girl

  • DS will wake up once during the night to eat, usually around 1am. We are still BFing and we bedshare. He is a freak for the boob as well and still nurses throughout the day. He never took a pacifier or a bottle.

  • Just to present a different picture, I EBF'd for 13-months and DS started sleeping through the night at 5-months (with some regression around 7-9 months).  What I think really helped was at 9-months no longer nursing to sleep- breaking that association seemed to help him learn to soothe himself back to sleep in the middle of the night.  He still has a pacifier at night and naptime.

  • We stopped co-sleeping / night-nursing at 9 months b/c it was just time.

She was waking over 10 times a night to nurse although rarely ever really eating. It was obviously a habit she had developed that she felt she "had" to nurse to get back to sleep.

I went from being awake so many time I lost track to having a STTN baby. It was truly a miracle transition she was obviously ready for.

If your baby is nursing plenty during the day and eating solids, there really isn't a need a 1yr+ to eat overnight.

It took around 3 weeks to gradually cut out all overnight feedings but it worked wonders for both of us.

  • DD usually wakes 1 or 2 times a night. I am still nursing her and she does go to bed with a pacifier. She won't take the pacifier to go back to sleep without first nursing though.

We have recently stopped bed sharing because I wanted to allow a lot of time for her to get used to sleeping in her crib before we have another baby this December. She's actually done a little better in her own room.

  • I didn't bf. DD has been a terrible sleeper from the start, and still is. I'd say there's no correlation.
  • Yes I do, still. She loves nursing, and I honestly don't mind the night wakings. Its our special time together.
  • I still BF and DD generally sleeps through the night - 7-5 and not a minute longer.  We never need to set an alarm clock.  When she wakes up at 5 she wants to nurse immediately and is fussy, crying, etc until I go to her and we nurse.  I am trying to wean her off the 3/4:00 nursing when i pick her up from day care.  yesterday I did well, today sucked.  I could not distract her with anything and finally gave in.  I still have to nurse her to sleep to.  We are never weaning but her wedding night will be odd if I have to nurse her to sleep!  Sigh :(

Oh and she took a pacifier once, one day, and that was it!

  • Yes, I bf and he did start STTN the month after he weaned.

It was also the month after his molars broke through and his ear infections stopped, so I don't know if the bf had that big of an impact.

He does sleep with a paci.

  • We still BF and J wakes up at least 2-3 times a night. He also uses a binky at night. Disaster, I know. He still refuses finger foods, so im pretty much stuck with bfing till this kid eats food-food.

  • She'll wean herself, most likely. My daughter was the same way at your daughter's age.  She was nursing 5-10 times a day.  Now (16 months) she only wants it at night night time.  The rest of the day she is too busy to nurse.  She also sleeps a hell of a lot better than when she was 12 months.  Like, 100 percent better.  12 hours straight.  Just be patient.
  • Sebastian is the same way.  I also co-sleep, but I'm exhausted.  He refuses to drink cow's milk, so I don't know what to do.  I feel like my supply is diminishing due to pregnancy, so I think that's making him wake up more.  He's hungry, and he eats plenty of food during the day, but I feel he's still looking for more.  I feel I just can't satiate him.  He also has never taken a pacifier.

  • I breastfed until 14 months, and after I quit, DD finally started sleeping through the night.

This!  We would cosleep and he would wake up like 10 times during the night looking for my boob.  He was addicted!  On the 4 of July, I said that enough was enough and I put him in his crib.  I NEVER let the kid cry, but he cried for 5 minutes, put his head down and STTN!

    There is hope.

  • I BF til 8months, had a crappy sleeper every day and still do.  We were never really big with the pacis they would always fall out.  She slept like crap on breastmilk, formula and cows milk.
