NBR: Question about Salmon expiration

Okay, classic case...put meat in the fridge...intended to cook it but days went by and didn't. Now wondering if it's still good.

Bought a heft salmon fillet from Costco on the 8th. It was packed on the 8th and the "Sell by date" is July 14th.  Today is the 13th and I'm wondering if it's okay to eat after 5 days in the fridge?  It smells fine. Maybe slightly more fishy than usual, which makes sense, since it's not as fresh.  All my online sources seem to say fish can be kept in the fridge 1-2 days and a few say 3-4 days. I think it's the "sell by date" that's confusing me...lol.

What do you think? Would you eat it? I'm such a nervous nellie about this type of stuff, but seriously...hurts my heart to throw away $30 worth of salmon.

Re: NBR: Question about Salmon expiration

  • I would probably eat it!  It would have just sat in the cooler at Costco till tomorrow, so dont see a huge problem with it!  MMMMM Salmon!!

  • I'm a total freak about food spoiling but I had the exact same situation with some salmon from costco a couple weeks back and I cooked it and it was fantastic!  I think your ok but for sure cook it tonight!

  • Thanks girlies!! I'm gonna cook it up tonight with Tom Douglas' salmon rub. Yummy.
  • Got to love Rub with Love!!  Yummy!~
  • totally OK.  They would keep it out until that sell by date, even then most stores will guarantee it to be fresh at home for a few days past that.  (although they don't sell it past that)

YIKES!  $30?  WOW.  DH fishes for salmon so we have a freezer full of it.  (Huge fillets from 30 pound fish)  To bad I'm not a fan.

I know. But It's a HUGE fillet. Like it takes two hands to even hold it and it won't even fit in a 9 x 12 pan. And Costco's salmon is pretty cheap. Same cut at Whole Foods would've run me like $60+ easily.

Hey no bragging about your freezer full of salmon that you don't even like!!!! :-P

  • totally fine.  I'd say fine for 3 days after the sell by date.
