2nd time moms come in. RE:labor

Okay so the post below about the at home birth has me scared.  My labor with DD was very fast 1 hr 45 min. We made it to the hospital, but they were rushing me into a room so I could push.  No drugs no nothing.

So my question is was your labor a lot shorter?  Would you talk to the doc about scheduling an induction vs. taking the risk?

  • Mine was a lot shorter.

In your case, I'd seriously consider an induction.  My coworker's wife just had her 2nd baby at home on the hallway floor in a very  similar story to below.

  • DD's labor from early to finish was about 10 hours.  I have no idea how it sped up so quickly the 2nd time around.  I would talk to your OB about an early induction.
  • My second was longer but it could be for a few different reasons.  My first was born at 35 weeks and my water broke on it's own.  I got to the hospital and was over 4 cm.  She was born 3 hours later with no drugs or anything.  My second was born at 37 weeks but I went in for contractions.  Again I was about 4 cm when I got there but they had to break my water for me around 7 cm.  I had an epi with her.  It was about 10 hours.  My third my water broke at 38 weeks.  Got to the hospital and I was only 1 cm.  Took about 3 hours for contractions to start.  Once they started she was born in about 3 hours.
  • Sorry, I'm also expecting #2 so can't answer your question but am interested to know as well.  My labor with DS was 31 hours, so I hope it'll be shorter than that, but not crazy short!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I will talk to my doc about scheduling something.

  • My labor with Kate was 26 hrs.  With Ben it was more like 8, and I walked into the hospital at 6 cm without feeling a single contraction.

You're welcome.  And, I'm a person who feels people should wait it out b/f scheduling a premature induction.  My OB said next time I will be induced early, although I highly doubt there will be a next time.  Also, my Mom always had fast labors; hers went from 6 hours (my sister), 3 hours me, and 90 minutes (my brother).  She was induced w/ both me and my brother.

  • I would definitely talk to your doc about an induction.

DD's labor was 18 hours and DS's was only 3 and half! From my experience second babies come a lot faster, lol!

  • i was in labor 36 hours from start to finish and i'm hoping that even if that's cut in half i'll be golden :)  once i felt the urge to push i only pushed 3 times (5 minutes, tops) so....that part was speedy.

although, i'm a fan of birthing centers and a home birth atmosphere anyway.

  • I was in labor with DS for 7 hours then pushed for 2 then had forecps. So 9 total start to finish but more like 7 hours till fully dilated.

I too wonder if #2 would come faster. That would be ok with me to be honest and I had a relatively quick labor for a first timer

  • I was induced for both children. Once my water was broken (active labor since I had no contractions prior), I had my son in 4 hours and my daughter in 1.5 hours. My doctor said he would schedule an earlier induction for my next child since he would be scared I wouldn't make it to the hospital.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about an induction. Good luck!

  • It makes me nervous too. We're TTC now and my labor and delivery with DD was almost exactly 4 hours. And this time around we'll have to worry about making sure she is taken care of. After having Hannah, more than one nurse and my OB told me to come to hospital with the first contraction next time!
  • My second labor was very, very short.  My doc says if I have a third child she would recommend/push induction, so take that for what it's worth.
  • Mine was SIGNIFICANTLY shorter - like from first even hint of a contraction to holding DD was 2 hrs.  From from time I left my house to holding her was less than an hour.  From time I was in my hospital room to holding her was 20 mins.  I wouldn't wait around if you feel contractions.

  • I'm not even pregnant yet but my OB said with the next baby I must get to the hospital as soon as I start contracting.  With DS I started to feel regular contractions at around 1 pm and got the hospital 3 hours later and I was already 6 cm.

I also live over a hour away from my hospital.
