Orange County Babies

please tell me if i need to buy these things!

hi all!

im doing my last minute shopping at BRU wanted to know if i need to buy:

a baby healthcare kit? i have read alot of mixed reviews that the hospital gives you the things you really need like the nasal aspirator etc. (i will be delivering at hoag, so any experiences would be great!)

im looking to buy a sleep positioner also- did anyone use this? and was it helpful? the reviews are also very mixed... bleh!

is there anything that you wish you had bought but didnt have after bringing your baby home?

tia!

Re: please tell me if i need to buy these things!

  • Not sure about the healthcare kit.  As long as you have something no matter how you get it is what's important.  So not sure if you need to buy or not.

I say no on the sleep positioner as I believe it's not recommended to use these.

A bouncy seat is the only thing we didn't have but bought later.  Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • I got a healthcare kit and only used the thermometer. :)  I would pass on it.
  • I am not getting the baby positioner since Infant CPR class sad no... I guess since they want you to put the baby on his/her back and if they can turn over on their own you don't want the positioner in the way when they want to turn back...

I heard that Nasal aspirator you can get it the hospital, you can ask the nurses and they will get you extra to take home... my friend was a deliver nurse at HOAG and thats what she told me... now she is at Saddleback... where I will be delivering... only thing I am getting from healthcare kit is thermometer... got a nail cliper... that's it...

     I hope I don't need anything else...

    Good Luck!

  • Health care kit is useless.  The stuff in the kit isn't the best quality, and I ended up buying them separately.

Sleep positioners are kinda useless too unless you have a baby who spits up a lot, and even if you do, you can always let the baby sleep in the swing or the car carrier.

I don't think I needed half of the half I got. Never used the crib (baby wants to sleep with me), glider, bouncer.

  • Hi Simplicity,

I don't have any real world experience with any of these things yet, but I am also delivering at Hoag, and the woman who taught the Baby Saver class said that a sleep positioner was not recommended.

  • I didnt need a healthcare kit at all. The hospital gave us what we needed. And i didnt get a sleep positioner either. DD refuses to sleep in her crib. SHe only sleeps in her swing or rocker. So I would wait on that too. Good luck and congrats!
  • i'd say get a good thermometer..one that takes the baby's temp quickly and not get a healthcare kit.

you might need some baby nail clippers. ry's nails were LONG when he was born and he somehow always managed to get the hand covers off.

    no to the sleep positioner.

  • you only need a good thermometer and nail clippers (take the nasal thing from the hospital).

we did use a sleep positioner (deluxe snuggle nest) cuz she would only sleep if in bed w/us no matter how close the PNP was next to the bed (trust me I was hardcore anti-bedshare until she came).  The snuggle nest gave a hard boundary around her.

  • I don't think you need either.

I just buy whichever medicines we need as we go along. I got a positioner at my baby shower, but I've not used it because I was told not to.

As for stuff after baby was home, I've just bought as needed.

  • hi all!

thanks for all the great responses! i will be getting only a good thermometer and nail clippers and passing on the sleep positioner.

    thanks again!

  • No and No.

My suggestion is to "steal" the nose thing from the hospital.  I still use it on her.  Buy a good thermometer.  You'll also need nail clippers and a nail file.  I'd take a baby nail file to the hospital.  I'm so glad I had one already in the diaper bag.  My baby was born with super long nails and I filed them a few hours after birth.

  • I got the healthcare kit and have used the thermometer, and nasal aspirator (because the one I took from the hospital got a hole in it) as well as the clippers.

I am now using the toothbrush (now that B got his first few teeth...at a year old), but looking back, I would not have registered for it...I would have purchased these things individually.

I used a sleep positioner for a few weeks, when he was about 4 months old and then he figurered out how to escape...I would hold off till necessary.
