When to call doc re clogged duct

I have a clogged duct that has been bugging me for a couple days now.  I've had clogged ducts before, but I've usually been able to resolve it myself within a couple hours, by pumping, hot compresses etc.  Well, this one has been inreasingly tender, so much that I have to hold my breath and grit my teeth if it gets bumped.

I've read that this can lead to mastitis, and to look out for red areas on the skin, and a fever.  Well, I'm not at that point, but the pain is getting worse and I feel slightly under the weather.  The clogged area is very hard.  WWYD?

Re: When to call doc re clogged duct

  • Have you tried nursing more often?  Also, start off nursing on the breast that has a clogged duct for several sessions in a row.

  • I would call if it does not clear within 4-5 days.  I would def. not go longer than that.  What worked for me is nursing on "all fours".  Lay DC on his/ her back and nurse while on top while supported on your hands and knees - like a dog I guess.

I hope this helps - good luck.

  • I would call before it got much worse...the last thing you want is mastitis! Good luck, I'll keep you in my T&P's!

  • You really don't want it to escalate to mastitis. If you're already feeling a little sick, go ahead and call. I swear, I almost knew the second I got mastitis. I felt like I got hit by a bus. Like the worst flu and pain ever.

  • I agree -- call now if you're feeling under the weather.  My mastitis started with general fatigue on a walk (I just thought I was really out of shape post-pregnancy) and moved to chills twelve hours later.  By the time I called the doc, it was like a full-blown flu, and I really didn't need to have waited that long.

I've had plugged ducts an awful lot and have tried everything. The only thing that ultimately worked for me was 10-20 minutes of a hot water bottle (really hot) followed by a 5-minute massage with an electric toothbrush (the vibration loosens the plug) and nursing immediately afterward.

     Good luck!!
