Manual Cervical Length Check?

My new OB's office does manual cervical length checks every other appointment I have with them (the other appointment is u/s).  I'm reading a lot on how the manual can cause preterm labor and since my cervix has been good this whole time I'm worried that it will cause preterm labor.

Is it normal to have checks that often? TIA

Re: Manual Cervical Length Check?

  • In my experience, every doctor is different.  If they couldn't get a good read of my cervix on u/s, then I had it checked manually.  When I ended up in L&D twice, it was checked manually.

  • I think you have to judge risk vs. benefit.  A good doctor knows how to check a cervix and will hopefully not put you into labor.  (I had a nurse midwife say after checking mine that it is definitely open, but she does not want to see how dilated and risk breaking my water or putting me into labor.)  Not knowing that your cervix is short is something you will want to know about.  You could question the doctor and ask him why he feels it is necessary to check that often, but I think some girls on here have had cervix checks where their cervix goes from long to short without them even knowing it.

I don't think it's typical for people who aren't at risk for PTL to have manual cervical checks. I get them a lot b/c I am at risk for PTL and it's never caused a problem. I thought the risk is related to an infection, which I'm guessing is rare. Or rare enough that the benefits justify the risk.
