Will you making or buying your LO's birthday cake?

I got this cake pan and was planning on make 3 cakes (giraffe, monkey and panda bear in strawberry, yellow and chocolate) but now I'm contemplating ordering a 3-tierd cake, something like this one. It's adorable, right? Problem is, I can spend about $25 on making the 3 cakes myself as opposed to $250-$300 on ordering the big one. I know the 3 tierd one is going a bit overboard but it's ADORABLE.

What do YOU plan on doing?

I will make my own.

BUT -- I'm very lucky. My mom is an amazing baker and my FIL is an amazing cake decorator. For our shower, he turned the cupcakes into baby rattles, they were beyond adorable.

I think I'll choose the design, practice, and if I can't get it right, I'll have them do it.

My mom made DDs cake and it was adorable, but if I had to buy it, I wouldn't have. I just couldn't have justified the expense. If she hadn't made it, I would have ordered a pretty sheet cake because I can't bake. I think that cake pan is super cute and I'm sure you could make some adorable cakes, but if you have the money and love the the 3 tier cake, then I saw go for it! This was DDs cake.

Thanks! This isn't even her best work. She has made some over the top cakes. She doesn't even make them professionally, but I'm always trying to convince her to since I'm sure watching my DD full time isn't keeping her busy enough. Big Smile

I'm making LO's smash cake. My mom always made a birthday cake for me- from Strawberry Shortcake to a princess castle, it was always amazing. I want to do that for DS. I'm making him a bug cake. DH talked me into getting a cake from the lady who made our wedding cake. We only got the bite we gave to each other of our entire wedding cake so this makes up for it.

I'm going to attempt to make a tiered cake. I'm not much of a baker, but I have a friend that is a wonderful baker so she's going to help me out with the baking, and I'm going to rely on the supplies and how-to books at Michaels to decorate. I will definitely do a trial run about a month before, if it turns out badly I'll just make a simple smash cake and order a sheet cake from Costco.

We are having the main cake made by the same baker who did our Bridal shower cake, wedding cake, baby shower cake, and christening cake (he makes the most amazing tasting cakes!!!)... for the smash cakes, we are having my DH's aunt make them.

You can make that cake!! They have fondant that you can easily roll out and just google how to make a tiered cake. I just suggest you practice a few times. It looks great, but $300 dollars for a cake is much for me, I would . rather buy my little one necessities (but that's because I can't afford a cake that much) If you can go for it!!

I will be making his since he is allergic to milk/eggs but we are having one made for his party at home and I will be making cupcakes to go along with it. For his party here, I am making an elmo face cake and cookie monster cupcakes and of course another special one for him.

You really think so? Part of me is tempted to try but the other part thinks I'm crazy. My husband just bought me a Kitchenaid mixer so I think he would rather me bake it! Thanks for the boost of confidence, I think I'll go to Michael's to look at their baking aisle.

Making my own cake and cupcakes. A cake would cost a fortune with the amount of guests we're having. I'm saving money wherever I can. I'm just doing boxed cake mix.

We're buying a cake. I'm doing a lot of the decorations, etc on my own so I didn't want to worry about the cake too.

We'll be buying a cake. I'm thinking about taking cake baking classes but I don't know when. I've always enjoyed baking but lack the creative skills to "decorate"
