When to pack a hospital bag?

We just went on a tour of L&D last night, and it made me start thinking we should probably pack bags soon . . . I only hesitate b/c I wear a lot of the clothes (yoga pants, etc) that I would otherwise pack on a daily basis.

How far along were you when you packed your hospital bag?

Re: When to pack a hospital bag?

  • I was farther along than I should've been when I finally packed it--36w maybe? Partly for the same reason as you. But I would at least go ahead and make your packing list now, and pack things you wouldn't need on a daily basis. That way if you or your H needs to throw things together last-minute at least there's a list of what to add.

  • I got my toiletries together around 30 weeks, and made a list of other things that I'd want to pack. I put an actual bag together about a week later, with things like my flip flops, socks, houseshoes, nursing tank tops. I kept the list there so that if DH had to put things in he would know what was needed.

At 33 weeks I had to go to L&D after a Dr. appointment so after that I finished packing up the bag, only leaving out things like my phone charger and glasses that I HAD to use on a daily basis. The bag stayed in our car and whenever I went to the doctor I would add the few things that I needed to the bag just in case I was sent to the hospital. Sure enough - last Monday I was sent from my Dr. office to the hospital for delivery.

FWIW, for the first two days the only thing I needed from my hospital bag were my contact stuff & glasses, and toothbrush/toothpaste. Oh, and earplugs. I was in the hospital gowns until Wednesday afternoon when I finally was able to shower, and the hospital provided everything else I needed. I didn't even pack that much and I still feel like I overpacked.

  • I kind of wished I started earlier since now I'm on rest and can't do it myself and can't do laundry anyway to wash stuff at the last minute.
  • I figured that I would pack things that I don't use on a daily basis somewhere around 30w. Travel size of shampoo/conditioner, my slippers and robe, extra undies, that kind of stuff. Then I will have a list of things that need to be added last minute (phone charger, camera, baby book, etc) so that it can be added by me or by hubby. But we only live about 8 minutes from the hospital, so anything we forget hubby or my mom can run back and get.
  • I have yet to do anything. Most of the stuff I want to bring is used daily, so I figure what's the point. I have a list ready so when it happens, I am prepared to order DH around to find things. I also figure I can send someone back at anytime if I need to, to pick stuff up. So there is no point in freaking out over it.

  • I actually started packing my bag last night and plan to finish tonight. I will also make a list of things that are used everyday so that if something happens DH will know exactly what to throw in there last minute.
