Camping ???'s

Has anyone gone camping with their LO yet? If so, can you think of any special "must-haves?" Also, what did you do about mosquitoes? Our pedi said no bug spray until 6 months. Any suggestions?

 Thanks.

  • They make kid friendly citronella rub...you can find it at most co-op's, ect.

  • I went camping for the day (stayed all day and late into the night but didn't sleep over).  We took his PNP for napping/sleeping.  I picked up a mosquito net in the baby section at Target - It goes over the stroller and also fit over the top of our PNP.

My pedi said that bug spray is okay, after 2 months of age, as long as it has at least 10% but no more than 30% DEET.  That said, I opted to skip on the bug spray.  I dressed DS in light-weight, long-sleeve clothing, had him wear a big floppy hat and kept a careful on him to ensure no bugs were around.  He didn't get a single bite!

The must-haves would be the net for the stroller/PNP, IMO.

  • PNP was great for naps and we have a big tent so it worked for overnight as well. The stroller was great, and backpack. I found an "all natural" bug spray for babies at our Vitamin Cottage. It did have 5% deet, so how it was all natural I'm not sure. Worked great though.
  • I would love to go camping with DS!  We were just talking the other day about when we thought he would be old enough to go.  I can't wait!

My dad swears by those new little clip-on fans that are made by Off, I think.  They are these little blue fans that you can clip onto your belt and such.  I'm sure you could hang one on his bouncy seat or whatever he is in and when you could wear one so he could be protected while you were holding him, etc.

I'm not entirely sure they are safe for kids, you'd have to do a bit of research, but it's a better alternative than rubbing bug spray on him.

  • If you know someone who sells Avon, you can get Skin So Soft. Never thought of it until MIL mentioned it.

Oh yes! That stuff is GREAT!

  • We just got back from 8 days of camping.  It was great!  I would say a net for the play and pack is a must.

  • I also got plastic bibs that could be wiped clean.  Easier, and less laundry to take home.

  • We are taking DS camping at the end of this month. Planning on bringing the pnp. We have mosquito nets for the pnp, infant seat and stroller. We are bringing his bouncy seat also, and his soothing sounds giraffe...basically most of the stuff we use with him every day.
