NBR - Decor assistance needed

We have lived in our house for over 4 yrs now, and the walls are still bare.  Honestly, it doesn't bother me too much, but it annoys the crap out of DH.  He wants me to do something about it ASAP!  So, I don't have enough to worry about (w/ boys on the way and prepping for them), but now I need to decorate a house too!  LOL

Well, our first project is the living room.  Currently, I have a sofa up against the exterior wall (w/ 2 windows above it) and 2 matching large chairs (butacones - sp) - with coffee table and 1 side table.  Oh, and the foyer table matches these tables.

Well, there is a HUGE wall (about the length of 1/2 the house) the seperates the living w/ the family room... and I have no clue what to do with it!  I would like to hang something on there - paintings or candle art of sorts, but need something massive.  Any ideas?

Re: NBR - Decor assistance needed

  • We got a huge mirror at Ikea for $70.  It was on clearance, but it's regularly $99.  We have a huge wall that we plan to hang it on.  I also have a simple shelf that matches the wood that we're considering hanging it right below the mirror and placing a few tealights on it.

Here's their decoration site with prints, frames, and mirrors:  https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/decoration/10757/

If you have any nice photography, you can enlarge the prints and just a nice frame for it.  We had one shot of the Chihully glass art from Fairchild that I photoshopped to bring out the colors and then we put it in a large Ikea frame and place it leaning on the wall over some bookcases.

  • The mirror you speak of we have too!  I have it leaning up on a wall in our room.  Since our dresser was under the window (now under the TV), we never purchased the one that matches, but this turned out to be an awesome deal for us.

I do like the idea actually.  Thanks.

As for the framing of photos, I've been wanting to do this for so long, but am not so creative to do so.  : (  My idea was to get frames that don't have the mattes in the middle, just glass.  I wanted to print the photos in B&W, and place the frame against the reddish wall for a pop of color.  Hope that all makes sense.  I guess I just need to get on the high horse and do it!  But finding those frames large enough is quite difficult.

  • I have a HUGE wall in my formal living room that we put up a HUGE mirror on.. I put wall sconces on each side that have a pillar candle and glass around it.  But picture frames would have looked good on each side too.
  • I had a few issues with the Ikea frames so I don't really want to recommend those, but they are inexpensive and if you get some mounting tools it'll make the process easier.
  • I'm really loving gallery walls...I have a ton of inspiration pictures saved at home but not here at work :( I would just cover that wall with a ton of different prints (either actual family photos or just inexpensive art prints) arranged in different sized frames. I personally love the look of a really exaggerated photo gallery wall, where do you basically as many frames as will fit in the space. Again, I have examples at home that I can c&p for you later.

Here are some images I just found on Google:

As you can see, some arrangements are more uniform and geometrical whereas some are more mish-mashed and look more casually thrown together (although I'm sure that it just appears that way and there was actually a lot of time put into figuring out how to arrange the frames lol).

Another idea is to put a series of shelves up that you can fill up with different decor that you love and even switch up depending on the season. It's really versatile because you can put up anything, from frames to books to vases to knick-knacks, etc. If your wall is that wide, maybe you can break it up by putting two "columns" of shelves with three shelves each.

  • Jen - I love that idea, which is similar to what I descirbed above.  I sent Dh some samples to see what he thinks.  If we go with this idea, I'm more of the symmetrical person... even though the other looks great together, but I'd some how mess it up and it would look like a mess!  LOL

I also like the ledges w/ leaning photos and decor on them, but I'm telling you the wall is massive!  So it may just look too overdone.

  • Jen, thanks for posting all these links - I need some ideas too.

Jackie, I just watched an episode of one of those "sell your house" shows on HGTV this weekend and they guys had a wall covered with frames with personal pics - in order to stage their house they replaced the personal pics with photos cut out of mags and postcards or different subjects - they did color ones, but it looked really nice.

Anyhoo - check out allposters.com also - we bought a huge vintage poster replica there and had them frame it - for this huge wall in our breakfast/bistro nook.  We also have 3 framed photos from them for our dining room.

  • That's pretty much what I was going for when I was working on the frames last week - this was the final result:  https://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d928b3127ccefac634d2d73700000030O00CbOWbVozasQe3nw4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

Right now, it just has pictures of us in different countries and cities.  But, I figure that we can continue adding to it and little by little fill up the wall with new memories.

  • Well, technically, we have 2 walls to fill, b/c the other side is bare!  I was searching the site Doris recommend (allposters), and OMG I came up with a brilliant idea.  Hope Dh goes for it.  We both adore Spain, and they have a ton of landscape posters on there.  We can get 3-4 and hang them on one side, and the other side I can document our travels (I have a ton of photos from our European tour and from CO and Vegas).

    Thanks ladies!

I love your idea because it combines sentimental pics with prints!

  • How about giant canvases of your favorite photos?  Here's a few sample arrangements.

This way you don't have to frame shop!

I love that!  I think three large canvas shots of your favorite photos would look beautiful :) And fwiw, I would definitely wait to have picutres of the boys before you use all your space.
