LO Straining to poop while eating & cluster feeding ?

Ok, so my pedi said it was normal to try and poop while eating, LO has a heck of a time figuring out how his guts work and often uses me as his personal toilet. I wouldn't mind this except he uses his entire body, including his mouth to wrench around, bite down etc. He'll pull off the nipple, wrench it in all directions, and bite down pretty hard while doing it. I have tried just letting him do it, taking him off each time he does it, and trying to hold his head. None off these things is making us happy. If I let him do it I'm sore, if I take him off he's screaming, and the repeated latching on is making me really sore (he has a good latch), and holding his head doesn't work. I'd need a vice grip! lol. It's causing our nursing sessions to be INCREDIBLY long and frustrating for both of us.

Also, LO cluster feeds a ton in the evenings. I feel like I'm feeding him tons between about 7pm and 11 pm. He'll have a full nursing session and then 15 minutes later want another one, etc. This wouldn't be such an issue if it didn't seem that his gas/straining to poop was at a high at this time (maybe he's using me to get it out???). So I'm basically feeding him off and on for that 4 hours and he's wrenching my nipple all over the place. Could it be comfort nursing? I've tried a paci to see if he'll get his straining done on that but he really isn't very interested in it and usually gets angry within a couple of minutes.

I'm just looking for some advice or someone who's had a similar experience. I'm getting so frustrated with bfing him and have ended up in tears a few times. The times when he's not straining are wonderful. No pain, shorter feedings, going 2-3 hours between feedings with a 4 hour stretch thrown in every once in a while.

LO is 3.5 weeks old.

thanks for any help

  • Are you sure he doesn't need to burp?  When she gets like that I burp her and pump her legs.

LO still eats constantly, but especially did the culster feedings at night especially around 7:pm.  I still have many days when I feel like All I do is feed her.  She also won't take a paci and likes to comfort nurse.

Sorry I can't offer more help.  GL!

I try and burp him - doesn't seem to be his problem. Glad to know I'm not the only one :)

    THanks.

  • I am new at BF so I unfortunately don't have advice for you but wanted to let you know that my LO is constantly cluster feeding in the evening too. I agree that is it comfort feeding because half of the time I don't even think he is swallowing, just sucking. It is difficult and I have ended up in tears a few times too. I have tried to hold him off to get him used to going 2 to 3 hours when I know he is not hungry, but then he ends up screaming so I always give in.
  • My LO does the same thing.  He's almost 9wks and has been doing it since the beginning.  I just help him stay latched so it doesn't hurt my nipple.  I can't get him to take the pacifier either.  It's frustrating, but I wouldn't want him to be constipated.
