AW: Colin can talk!!

I realize this might not be so exciting to most people, but Colin was diagnosed with a severe speech delay earlier this year. He was 75% delayed in expressive language and 85% delayed in receptive language. He receives speech and developmental therapies every week.

Apparently in the last 3 weeks, everything just started to make sense to him. 3 weeks ago, he had zero words. Barely even babbled. Today, he has TWENTY words. He adds at least one new word every day and it is amazing. I just can't believe that it all suddenly 'clicked' for him. He still struggles with receptive language and is not caught up for expressive (and is still developmentally delayed, although I'm also seeing improvement there as well), but oh my gosh. I am so excited. It is so much fun hearing him talk and ask for things. I love it!

  • What fabulous news!!!  I can't tell you how happy I am for you AND for Colin!  He must be so much happier now that he can communicate his needs.  Did his therapist say there was any particular method or lesson that made it "click," or it just kind of happened naturally?

We had really been working with him on signing more words and once he figured out that he could communicate with us through signs he seemed to realize that communication is good and that's when he started talking. :)

  • That's wonderful! I think it's the 18 month speech boom. It's like that with almost every child I have babysat where at 18 months they just all of a sudden get it. I usually tell parents to wait until 18 mo and if nothing talk to the pedi. (this is not a professional opinion, just from experience). The only child I didn't see it in was Keagan and I think that was due to him being autistic.
